DeKalb Sending 46 Girls Track Athletes to State Meet

Redan, Stephenson and Arabia Mountain have qualifiers in the GHSA Girls’ State Track and Field competition.

The 2013 GHSA Girls’ High School State Track and Field Meet kicks off on Thursday, May 9 at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany and 46 DeKalb County athletes are preparing for competition. Class AAAAA athletes lead the way in the girls’ qualifying with 26 individuals preparing for the state meet led by Martin Luther King Jr. with six individuals and two relay teams moving forward. Dunwoody follows with five individuals including Lauren Jackson (first in 400 and 800), Alex Cameron (first in 3200) and the 4x100 and 4x400 relays teams that each took first in Sectional B at Grovetown last Saturday. Redan, Stephenson Finish Track Season in Top Ten

The State Track and Field Meet was held at Jefferson’s Memorial Stadium.

Class AAAA Redan capped off a fine 2013 track season with a Top 10 finish in the State Track and Field Championships at Jefferson’s Memorial Stadium on Saturday with 25 points to tie for eighth in the team rankings. Marist pulled away to an easy 71-38 win over LaGrange to the state title. The Redan team brought home a pair of bronze medals led by Chris McBride who captured the bronze in the long jump with a leap of 23’-03.25”. He also was fourth in the triple jump (44’-05.75”) to account for 11 of his team’s 25 points. The 4x400 meter relay team of Calvin Simpson, Ian Grandison, Romello Nalepa and Deion Reid took third with a time of 3:28.52 to account for the second bronze medal for the Raiders. Baseball Recap: Stephenson Finishes Season Undefeated

A Junior Varsity win over Lakeside clinches the title for the Jaguars.

Corey Forde and Brian Strong collected three hits each to lead the Stephenson Jaguars to a 10-3 victory over the Lakeside Vikings in the championship game of the Randy Case DeKalb County Junior Varsity Baseball Tournament at Sequoyah Middle School on Friday. The victory gave Coach Gene Washington’s Jaguars a perfect 17-0 record on the season as Stephenson scored eight unanswered runs after falling behind 3-2 in the top of the third inning. Stephenson had jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second only to have Lakeside answer with three runs in the top of the third to take the 3-2 lead. Stephenson Faces Lakeside for DeKalb JV Baseball Title Friday

First pitch is today at 5 p.m.

The finals for the 2013 Randy Case DeKalb County Junior Varsity Baseball Tournament will pit the Stephenson Jaguars against the Lakeside Vikings at Sequoyah Middle School with the first pitch set for 5 p.m. today (Friday). Lakeside (11-4-1) is the defending tournament champ and is in its fourth consecutive championship game after defeating Miller Grove 6-0 in the semifinal on Thursday. Stephenson rolled past Tucker 11-0 to reach the tournament championship with a perfect 16-0 record which it will put on the line. Three With Local Ties Graduate from Basic Military Training at Lackland AFB

Robert Taylor, Tamika Bradley, and Dymond Brooks have Stone Mountain connections.

The following recent basic military training graduates at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio have Stone Mountain connections, according to Hometown News Service: > Air Force Reserve Airman Robert L. Taylor, of Stone Mountain. Taylor is the son of Todd and Cassandra Taylor and is a 2010 graduate of Stephenson High School. > Air Force Airman 1st Class Tamika H. Bradley is 2006 graduate of Stephenson High School, Stone Mountain. She earned an associate degree in 2008 from Le Cordon Bleu in Tucker. > Air Force Reserve Airman Dymond M. Brooks is the daughter of Aisha Brooks of Stone Mountain and a 2012 graduate of Shiloh High School in Snellville.

Stephenson Shuts Out Southwest DeKalb in Region 6-AAAAA Play (Photos)

The No. 4 ranked Stephenson Jaguars’ defense held Southwest DeKalb to 92 yards of offense on the way to a 32-0 shutout in Region 6-AAAAA action at Hallford Stadium on Friday night; take a look at the photo gallery of the game's highlights.

The Stephenson Jaguar defense was so dominant in this past Friday's game at Hallford Stadium that the Southwest DeKalb Panthers were unable to cross midfield with their nine offensive drives, excluding their interception to get the ball in Jaguar territory. Southwest averaged finishing its drives at its own 23 yard line. Stephenson’s defense overcame an interception in the second quarter by Southwest’s Justin Mincy which he returned to the Stephenson 41. Facing a fourth and five at the Stephenson 22 the Panthers went for a 37 yard field goal attempt, but a bad snap turned into an interception by Stephenson’s Rashad Payne and the Panthers would never threaten to score the rest of the way.
