The Redan Raiders are making their first appearance in the baseball state playoffs’ quarterfinals since the 2010 season as they travel to Locust Grove in the third round of the Class AAAA playoffs on Tuesday. The best-of-three series is set for a doubleheader beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday and a third game, if necessary is set for 5 p.m. on Wednesday. The Raiders (24-6), Region 6-AAAA runners-up, are coming off a second round sweep of Region 5 champion Columbus last in Columbus. The Raiders rallied for a 5-4 win in the opener and then pulled away 9-4 in the second game to get the sweep. Redan comes up short in defending Class AAAA state title.
Defending Class AAAA state champion Redan was trailing Marist by 22.50 points with four events to go but a valiant effort to retain its state title came up just 7.5 points sort in falling 57.50 to 50 to Marist at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany on Saturday. Redan put up a very solid 25 points led by a silver medal performance in the 4x400 meter relay (3:51.15) during those last four events, but Marist held on for the victory. Crystal Gray was part of the 4x400 relay team along with Tanzanie' Brown, Miyah Golden and Shequilla McClain while bringing home a gold medal in the 400 meter dash (55.85) and bronze medal finish in the 200 meter dash (25.03) in leading the Lady Raiders’ rally attempt. The DeKalb County Board of Education will participate in a Meet and Greet with the public today, April 30 at 6:30 p.m. at Redan High School, 5247 Redan Road in Stone Mountain. An announcement Monday said the gathering is "in keeping with the State of Georgia's Open Meetings Act" and added, "while a quorum of Board members will be present, no action will be taken." The meeting is being hosted by the South DeKalb Parent Council.

Principals Greg Goodwin of Redan High School in Stone Mountain and Yolanda Turner of Murphey Candler Elementary in Lithonia were among five regional principals of the year announced Monday by the DeKalb County School District. A district-wide winner will be announced on May 17 during a ceremony at Lakeside High. The other winning principals are: The DCSD included this information about Goodwin and Turner in its announcement: Goodwin began his career as a teacher at Miller Grove Middle 27 years ago. In addition to his experiences as a teacher and assistant principal, Goodwin also served as Redan's head baseball coach and in 2000, was the first African American and youngest coach to be inducted into the Georgia Baseball Hall of Fame. The 2012 DeKalb County Cross Country Championships are set for Tuesday, Oct. 9 and teams had a final tune up at Arabia Mountain last week. Lakeside dominated the second boys’ and girl’s varsity races to cruise to an easy sweep at Arabia Mountain. Seven Vikings finished in the top nine of the boys’ race led by Dawit Alemu (18:51.72) and Will Smith-Purcell (18:59.40) who took second and third, respectively, behind Clarkston’s Hussen SAdik (18:31.09). Clarkston’s Muhozi Aimable took fourth in 19:10.85 and the next five runners were all from Lakeside to seal a 23-50 win over the Angora’s. DeKalb County school football teams gathered at James Hallford Stadium in Clarkston Tuesday during their Media Day event to introduce coaches, players, take photos and briefly discuss goals for the upcoming season. The 2012 DeKalb County Senior and Junior All-Star Baseball Classics are now set with the announcing of the rosters for the four teams. Sequoyah Middle School, Chamblee High School’s field, is playing host to the two games this year with the Senior All-Star Classic set for Wednesday, May 30 and the Junior All-Star Classic set for Thursday, May 31.
