Lithonia's Miller Grove is among those that have their way to the state tournament.
DeKalb County high school basketball teams moved on to the Class AAAAA state playoffs Final Four at the expense of fellow DeKalb teams on Tuesday night. Miller Grove in Lithonia swept a pair of Top 10 match ups at home against fellow DeKalb and Region 6-AAAAA opponent Tucker to pick up two of the Final Four spots. The No. 3 ranked and 2012 Class AAAA state champion Lady Wolverines (25-5) got nine fourth quarter points from senior guard Katie Hunt to rally for a 50-40 victory over the No. 2 ranked Tucker Lady Tigers (25-5). Perennial boys’ state playoff teams Tucker and Columbia meet in a preseason contest this week.
Four reigning state champions and 34 other DeKalb basketball teams begin their 2012-13 basketball seasons this week as they look toward state playoff berths in February. Three DeKalb schools will host on Tuesday as Clarkston goes to Druid Hills, Lakeside to Cedar Grove and Southwest DeKalb entertains Wesleyan. All the games are set for 5:30 and 7 p.m. with the girls playing first at each site. Arabia Mountain travels to Tri-Cities and Stephenson goes to North Clayton to round out the Tuesday schedule. Panthers defeat Bulldogs in battle of Class AAAA ranked teams
The No. 3 ranked Southwest DeKalb Panthers used a 10-0 run to end the first quarter to take control in their Region 6-AAAA matchup with No. 8 ranked Chamblee Bulldogs on the way to a 62-46 victory at Southwest DeKalb. Emanuel Walker's drive for a layup with 4:49 to play in the first quarter started the run and gave the Panthers a 5-4 lead they would never relinquish. Leading 29-18 at the half, the Panthers opened the second half with back-to-back dunks by nationally ranked players Jordan Price and William Goodwin to expand the lead to 15. Tucker defeated Mississippi Class AAAAAA state champion Meridian 45-44 in the opening round, and Columbia took the title with four wins.
The Class AAA No. 1 ranked Columbia Eagles (14-1) defeated the No. 2 ranked Eagles Landing Golden Eagles (14-1) 44-37 to win the inaugural Converse Invitational at Columbia over the holiday break. Senior post player Jhaustin Thomas put together a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds, his fourth double-double of the tournament, to lead Columbia to the victory while handing Eagles Landing its first loss of the season.
