From Big Heap of Rubble to A Future Zaxby's

The old Dairy Queen structure on S. Hairston is now a memory. After the site is cleared, Zaxby's plans to build a new restaurant.

On Monday a heavy equipment operator lifted the remaining scraps of the old Dairy Queen on S. Hairston, which once served up ice cream and lunch fare, into a big pile. With the demolition of DQ, Zaxby's -- known for its chicken fare and "Zalads"-- plans to move into the 30088 ZIP code, possibly by early next year. Back in September, TJ McLeroy, chief operating officer of McLeroy's/JGMC.McDreams Enterprises, Inc., a licensee of Zaxby's Franchising, Inc., told Patch the restaurant would employ about 35-50 people. The 74-seat Zaxby's will have a drive-through window and be 3,195 gross square feet. See also: Zaxby's Gets the OK to Build on S. Hairston

Zaxby's Gets the OK to Build on S. Hairston

Demolition of the former Dairy Queen building will begin in a few weeks. The restaurant franchisee asked for, and got, some exceptions to the Greater Hidden Hills Overlay District, and made changes to its landscaping design, too.

The DeKalb County Zoning Board of Appeals has approved Zaxby's request for variances, or exceptions, to the Greater Hidden Hills Overlay District. The restaurant, working with the surrounding neighborhoods, is also making  changes to its streetscape design, said Jan Costello, coordinator of the overlay district committee. The code in the Greater Hidden Hills Overlay District calls for buildings to be no more than 20 feet from the street. Zaxby's asked that its location be 67.5 feet from the street to make room for the drive-through and handicapped parking. Daryl Cook, president of Watts & Browning Engineers Inc., said through e-mail correspondence that the existing sidewalk in front of the property will be removed to allow for a 5 foot …

Zaxby's Explains Its Code Variance Requests

The owner of the S. Hairston property and project team say they didn't know until two months ago that the proposed restaurant would be within an overlay district.

In the first development project in the area since the Greater Hidden Hills Overlay District was signed into law last year, a Zaxby's restaurant franchisee is requesting variances from the code in order to accommodate several features of the proposed restaurant property at 1152 S. Hairston Rd. Members of the Hidden Hills Civic Association (HHCA) and overlay commitee as well as several other local residents met with the owner, engineer and additional project team members at the property on Wednesday evening to go over the restaurant's plans and requests. The code in the Greater Hidden Hills Overlay District calls for buildings to be no more than 20 feet from the street. Zaxby's wants to be 67.5 feet from the street. This is the main …

Glad to see some life being pumped into this area...even if it's another place to by chicken strips. Zaxby's should do well there though. I'll probably go there more than all the other existing fast food places. Any word on plans for the abandoned KFC on the other side of Redan?   more ›
