Prepare for Friday, Shortest Day of the Year

Some people interpret the Mayan calendar to predict the end of the world on Friday.

Friday will be an important day for sky watchers and people holding off on their Christmas shopping. It's the Winter Solstice, the official beginning of winter and the shortest day of the year at nine hours, 54 minutes and 31 seconds. The website timeanddate.com says the sun will be directly overhead on the Tropic of Capricorn in the southern hemisphere. The solstice occurs at 6:12 a.m. Sunrise in Atlanta will be at 7:39 a.m. There will be a Winter Solstice Celebration, which will include a hike and hot drinks (bring your own mug) on Friday, Dec. 21, from 7-10 p.m. at the Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve, 3787 Klondike Rd.
