Construction of the new Walmart on Memorial Drive and N. Hairston Road could start within a month, a spokesman said at Friday's groundbreaking ceremony. Glen Wilkins said the 150,000 square foot store, which will be similar to but smaller than the one on Memorial and Columbia, is slated to open in the second quarter of 2013. It will create 250 full and part-time jobs, he said. Proposed super center's next stop is DeKalb Board of Commissioners Jan. 24
The DeKalb County Planning Commission on Tuesday approved Walmart's proposed super center for Memorial Drive near N. Hairston Road. The commission's nod comes with conditions, including a right-in, right-out triangle at Kenilworth Drive, so drivers aren't tempted to go through the Kenilworth Estates community, which is across from a proposed store entrance on N. Hairston. Walmart has agreed to foot the bill for the triangle; company spokesman Glen Wilkins did not have cost estimates for the structure immediately available Tuesday night. The hiring center of the new Stone Mountain Walmart Supercenter opened April 10 at Georgia Piedmont Technical College and is taking applications through May 12. Dan Fagan, manager of the new store at the intersection of Memorial Drive and South Hairston Road, said they are looking to hire 150 to 250 full- and part-time associates.
