Hundreds attended the "first look" at the new YMCA at Wade Walker Park.
Patch was there to capture the excitement of the day as the much-anticipated Wade Walker Park Family YMCA welcomed its first big crowd of visitors during a "first look" event Saturday afternoon. "This is about young people," said CEO Burrell Ellis. "This is about building the foundation." The water was cool at the facility's outdoor pool (the indoor pool was not open) where adults and kids enjoyed some splash time. The Y's executive director, Winston Myers, told Patch the facility is slated to open around the August 16 timeframe. The off-site membership office for the new Wade Walker Park Family YMCA in Stone Mountain is open and located in the Food Depot shopping center adjacent to the park at 5723-D Rockbridge Road. Membership office hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Wade Walker Park Family Y opens in August 2012 at 5605 Rockbridge Road. There will be a tour of the facility July 7. The Y is a collaboration of the YMCA of Metro Atlanta and DeKalb County. Through the partnership with the County, residents in the 30058, 30083, 30087, and 30088 zip codes will not pay joining fees. You've watched it go up. In a couple of weeks, you'll finally be able to take a look inside. There will be a community “First Look” at the new 60,000 square foot Wade Walker Park Family YMCA on Saturday, July 7 from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. A DeKalb County press release describes the event as "a festive experience for the entire family to enjoy." Folks will get a tour and have fun with games and entertainment. There's going to be food, too. The Y is at 5585 Rockbridge Rd. It is slated to open in August. Look what's up at the new facility, still under construction.
Update: It's big, blue and twisty: the new pool slide is up at the Wade Walker YMCA. With the slide and mushroom water feature up, the new facility is inching closer and closer to reality. Judging from the comments alone on Patch's story about the groundbreaking of the still-under-construction Y, people are greatly anticipating its opening: "I am so excited about the y coming to our area," wrote D. Palmer in April. "I have been anxiously awaiting this since the signs went up last year," wrote Cynthia L. earlier this month.
