Temps in the 70s, Severe Storms in the Forecast

A cold front is expected to push across north and central Georgia this week, ushering in higher temps and possible thunderstorms by Wednesday.

A cold front is expected to push across north and central Georgia this week, ushering in warmer weather and maybe some severe thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service. "Instability and wind shear values appear sufficient to support the development of scattered to numerous thunderstorms on Wednesday, especially during the afternoon and evening," meteorologists say in a hazardous weather statement. "Strong upper level support suggest a few storms could be severe across north and central Georgia." There's a slight chance of showers today (20 percent) in Stone Mountain and Lithonia, high of 70, while Wednesday holds a 100 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, some of which could produce gusty winds, according to the …

Photos of the Day: Double Rainbow, Streaky Clouds

Before the rains became heavy Thursday morning, twin rainbows appeared. Later in the day, clouds reached out like fingers across a beautiful blue sky.

We snapped this photo of a "double rainbow" (look to the right of the prominent one)while traveling down S. Hairston Road Thursday morning. Later, the gray skies went away to reveal a fantastic sky streaked with clouds.

Wind and Fire Advisories Issued for North Georgia

Most of north and central Georgia are under both a high wind as well as a fire danger advisory for most of the day and into the early evening hours on April 23, 2012.

In a day when the temperature is expected to reach just 61, the National Weather Service in Peachtree City has issued a wind advisory to remain in effect from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today. In addition to the wind advisory, there is a high fire danger conditions alert has been issued for today and into the early evening hours. Forecast: Chance of This Stuff Washing Away

We're likely to get relief from that yellow-green sign of spring.

Tired of seeing the yellow-green gunk over everything? Today's forecast calls for occasional showers and thunderstorms, sure to wash away the build-up of spring's less attractive feature. Highs will be in the mid 70s, south winds at 5 to 15 mph. Chance of rain is 90 percent. Chance Occasional showers and thunderstorms. Highs in the mid 70s. South winds 5 to 15 mph. There is a 90 percent chance of rain today. This evening, there's a 60 percent chance a rain, with possible thunderstorms after midnight. Lows will be in the upper 50s; light and variable winds. Hopefully, come Saturday, things will look much better.

Weather Alert - Wind Advisory and Freeze Watch

Wind Advisory for Sunday, Freeze Watch for Monday, and on top of that there is a high pollen alert for allergy sufferers.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory and freeze warning for several counties in Georgia. According to weather.com, the wind advisory is in effect from noon until 6 p.m. Sunday, March 4, and the freeze watch will be in effect from Monday evening through to Tuesday morning, March 6. The winds are reported to be northwest 10 to 20 mph with gusts of up to 30 mph. The freezing temperatures are expected to be mid 20s to lowers 30s. The NWS warns the impact of these strong winds could be the blowing of unsecured objects. Also, weak trees could be blown down. Freezing temperatures could threaten early spring growth. Suggested precautions A wind advisory means a sustained wind speed of at least 20 with gusts of 35 mph or stronger…

Tornado Watch Issued Tonight

Severe weather expected; watch issued until 1 a.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch tonight for most of metro Atlanta, including DeKalb and Gwinnett County. The watch runs until 1 a.m Saturday. Severe storms, with hail and tornadoes, are possible as a strong cold front appoaches from the West. This is the same storm system that has spawned a tornado outbreak today in the Ohio Valley.

Old Man Winter Arrives Today

Two weather advisories issued for Saturday by the National Weather Service.

Two weather warnings have been issued for Saturday by the National Weather Service – a wind advisory and warnings of a surge of artic air. These advisories are for all of north and central Georgia. DeKalb County, including Stone Mountain, is under a wind advisory from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday. According to Weather.com, 20 to 25 mph northwest winds — with gusts of up to 40 mph — are expected to begin mid-morning. These could bring down weak trees and limbs causing isolated power outages. Motorists are advised to use extra caution, especially those in high profile vehicles, as these strong winds could make driving difficult.
