DeKalb Middle School Football: Lithonia Defeats Stephenson for Trail to the Title Championship

The Lithonia Bulldogs had a 12-8 victory.

The Lithonia Bulldogs concluded an improbable run to the Trail to the Title middle school football championship with a 12-8 victory over defending champion Stephenson Jaguars. A big fourth and goal stop of Stephenson quarterback Xavier Shepherd by the Lithonia defense with the Jaguars threatening to score the winning touchdown inside the Lithonia 10 with less than two minutes to play put the finishing touches on the Bulldogs 12-8 championship victory. Lithonia (8-2) opened the title game by taking the opening possession and driving 63 yards in 12 plays culminated with a two-yard touchdown run by Kamrie Mullins with 3:32 remaining in the first quarter. Region 6-AAAAA Getting Interesting As Season Moves Into Final Three Weeks

The 7-0 Martin Luther King Lions are at the top of the standings.

The Region 6-AAAAA playoff race is really heating up as the top teams battle over the next three weeks for the four playoff spots. The No. 2 ranked Martin Luther King Lions (7-0) are currently atop the standings at 6-0 followed closely by Miller Grove (6-1, 5-1), Stephenson (5-1, 5-1) and Tucker (6-1, 5-1) tied for second. The four teams match up again this week headlined by the Lions against Stephenson in a rematch of last year’s exciting 50-49 last second win by the Lions. The game is set for telecast on GPB-TV (8) at 8 p.m. from Hallford Stadium. Update: Stephenson's Gridiron Challenge Game Canceled

The game was scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 1 at 3 p.m.

Updated 1:33 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31: The Gridiron Challenge game between Stephenson and Pensacola Pine Forest (FL) has been cancelled. Pensacola schools were closed due to Hurrican Isaac this week and due to this the Pine Forest team was scattered as families got out of harms way. Attempts to find a replacement game were unsuccessful. Updated Wednesday, Aug. 30: Pensacola has shut down schools due to Isaac and Pine Forest (Stephenson's opponent) will not be coming to play on Saturday. North Gwinnett is negotiating with other schools and at this point Tallahassee's Lincoln High is tentatively set up to be the new opponent for Stephenson. Stephenson Pair Named to 2012 All-Madden Football Team

Two senior players from the high school were picked.

Stephenson Jaguars’ senior running back Brandon Washington and senior offensive guard Justin Haymes were recently named to the IMG Academy’'s 2012 All-Madden Football Team. The pair took part in IMG'’s invitation only mini-camp in Bradenton, Florida under the direction of former Florida State quarterback Chris Weinke who won the 1999 Heisman Trophy while guiding the Seminoles to an undefeated season and a national championship. Their performances at the mini-camp, both on and off the field, along with competing in 7-on-7 competitions earned the pair the selection. Washington (5-6, 150) is the returning leading rusher for the Jaguars having rushing for 181 yards (7.9 yards per carry) and three touchdowns in 2011. "“Brandon was our first …

Stephenson Set for National Stage in Season Opener

Jaguars to take on Pensacola Forest High School Sept. 1 in the National High School Gridiron Challenge.

The Stephenson Jaguars step onto the national stage to open the 2012 high school football season as they take on Pine Forest High School of Pensacola, FL in the second of three games in the National High School Gridiron Challenge hosted by North Gwinnett High School on Saturday, September 1. The game is set for a 3 p.m. start and will be aired live on WSB Channel 2 in Atlanta and over 13 states by Comcast Sports Southeast (CSS) as well as being broadcast on 680 The Fan in Atlanta. The Jaguars hold a string of 12 consecutive playoff appearances (13-11 overall in the playoffs) including a 2005 appearance in the Class AAAAA state semifinals at the Georgia Dome. DeKalb Schools Baseball: Dunwoody, Columbia Win in Best of DeKalb

The 2012 Best of DeKalb showdown featured a pair of exciting contests March 10 at Columbia. Coach Chan English’s Dunwoody Wildcats trailed Arabia Mountain 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning before erupting for eight runs on the way to posting a 10-1 triumph in the first game. Host Steve Dennis and the Columbia Eagles (5-1-1), meanwhile, rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to knock off Redan by a 3-2 count in the nightcap. The Arabia Mountain triumph was one of three impressive decisions for the Wildcats on the week, sandwiched around two other victories over Centennial (10-0) March 5 and Cherokee (15-5) March 10. DeKalb Schools Basketball: Three More Wins into Elite Eight

But Stephenson fell to North Cobb Wednesday, 57-60.

DeKalb picked up three more victories on Wednesday night to give the school district eight entries into the Elite Eight field of the respective high school state basketball tournaments. The No. 9 Martin Luther King Jr. Lions (21-9) had four players in double figures scoring to move past South Cobb (14-15) 77-61 into the Class AAAAA Elite Eight. The group of four Lions was led by De’Aires Tate with 17 points and 10 rebounds including a pair of offensive rebounds for easy points underneath in the first half as the Lions built a 41-31 lead at the half. Tate and Greg King, who had 15 points in the game, both had dunks in the opening two minutes of the second half as the lead expanded to 47-33. South Cobb’s Devocio Butler had a game-high 19 …

DeKalb Schools Basketball: Boys' Teams Go for Quarterfinal Berths Today

The Stephenson Jaguars travel to No. 2 ranked North Cobb (25-4) for a 7:30 p.m. contest.

Five boys' teams play second round games on today (Wednesday, Feb. 29) as No. 9 ranked Martin Luther King Jr. and No. 1 ranked Columbia host. The Martin Luther King Lions (20-9) are coming off a triple overtime win against Lowndes County in the Class AAAAA opening round and host South Cobb (14-14) at 7 p.m. in going for their first Elite Eight berth since their 2007 run to the Class AAAAA Final Four. The Eagles (27-1) host Dalton (21-7) at 6:30 p.m. as they go for their ninth consecutive Elite Eight berth and their 12th consecutive playoff victory. Stephenson Coaches Participating In Football All-Star Game Tonight

The Jaguars' Ron Gartrell and Donald Sellers will be at Georgia Junior Bowl tonight, Dec. 30.

Stephenson High Schoolvarsity football coach Ron Gartrell and coach Donald Sellers, the defensive coordinator for the Stephenson Jaguars, will take the field today for the Georgia Junior Bowl, touted by its organizers as the first all-star football game of its kind showcasing the top high school football players in the state of Georgia. Kick off will be at 7 p.m. today at Grady High School Stadium. The game will be televised live on ESPN3. The purpose of the Georgia Junior Bowl is to enhance student athletes recruiting exposure before their senior year and to aide in the their development academically, athletically and socially, according to the event's website.
