Viewfinder: Winter Fun at Snow Mountain

You don't have to go north to enjoy some winter snow. Stone Mountain has plenty of winter fun nearby.

Last winter's week of freeze was very unusual for Atlanta. Most of the time when it snows here, it melts in a few days. So there's usually not much time to enjoy winter activities such as sledding, snowball fights and and snowman building. Weather Melts Snow Mountain's Nov. 23 Opening Plans

The attraction is scheduled to open this weekend.

Georgia weather won't let it snow at Stone Mountain Park just yet. Stone Mountain Park says that "due to unseasonable weather conditions," its Snow Mountain won't be open today or tomorrow, Thanksgiving. That means November has not only been a bit too warm at times for the park's attraction to open as planned today, it's really just too wet. "The rain last night was intense," said Stone Mountain Park spokeswoman Jeanine Jones. "Rain is our biggest enemy." Snow Mountain operates much like a ski resort, Jones said. The park has to continue monitoring the weather to make sure conditions are favorable for the snowy attraction. If you purchased tickets for today and Nov. 24, you'll get an e-mail detailing how to re-book your session to a new …
