A special guest will share the effects of losing accreditation in the Clayton County School System at two community meeting sessions this week at Hairston Crossing Library, on Jan. 15. DeKalb School Board Must Attend State Hearing

Board members to appear before education officials on Jan. 17.

Members of DeKalb County's school board have been summoned to a hearing on Thursday, Jan. 17 by Georgia's Department of Education. They are being asked for reasons to avoid suspension following the decision of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the district's accrediting agency, to place the school system on probation. An investigation by SACS officials found fiscal mismanagement, abuse of power and unethical hiring practices, and Gov. Nathan Deal is under pressure from parent groups to fire the entire board. DeKalb Schools Placed on Probation

An accrediting agency takes a serious step in the ongoing controversy.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools has placed the DeKalb County School System on probation, according to the Atlanta-Journal Constitution. “I’m disappointed that they’re going to put us on probation. Nobody wants to be on probation,” school board chairman Eugene Walker said. "We’ve not done anything egregious,” he added.
