National Night Out in Stone Mountain (Photos)

Several local communities enjoyed fun and fellowship during the annual event.

For the folks at Hairston Lake, National Night Out actually took place in the early afternoon. No matter. Neighbors fellowshipped with other neighbors, enjoyed a cook-out, and learned about looking out for themselves and each other. "Basically [it's about] safety and getting to know your neighbors," said Ernest Flemister, homeowners association president at Hairston Lake on Hairston Road. The community is mostly senior citizens and handicapped people, he said. The annual National Night Out involves over 11,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases around the world. Whether they're planning cookouts or kids' activities, some Stone Mountain communities are participating in the 27th annual National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug.7 (check the attached PDF from DeKalb County listing participating neighborhoods). National Night Out Training 2012

Community workshop will take place June 12 in Lithonia.

The 29th Annual National Night Out is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 7. We invite you to our training program so that your community will be ready to participate! Tuesday, June 12 at 6:30 p.m. Stonecrest Library 3123 Klondike Road in Lithonia During this training program, attendees will learn the history of National Night Out (NNO) and how it began, learn what is needed to organize a National Night Out event for your community, hear from other neighbors who have participated in past NNO events and receive NNO resources such as organizational packets. Stone Mountain Residents Show Unity During National Night Out

Shadowrock Acres neighbors hope their event sends a message: "We watch out for each other."

In an effort to show neighborhood unity, pride and concern, some 42 residents in the Shadowrock Acres subdivision in unincorporated Stone Mountain participated in the 27th annual National Night Out, also known as America’s Night Out Against Crime, with a parade through the community Tuesday. Holding signs with messages such as "We Value The Rock" the group of neighborhood watch block captains and other residents, including several children and even a few pets, started off for the eight-tenths of a mile route from Parkstone Drive and Pine Rock Way in the community of 239 homes. Celebrate National Night Out in Your Community

National Night Out, an event that marks communities standing in solidarity against crime, is tonight from 6-8 p.m.

National Night Out, or America’s Night Out Against Crime, takes place tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. Snellville and Lilburn will celebrate the event with a festival, activities for children, and a chance to meet local and county police officers, while other areas, like unincorporated Stone Mountain and Tucker, will host individual events in various neighborhoods. The national event was introduced in 1984 by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), a nonprofit crime prevention organization that works with thousands of crime watch groups and law enforcement agencies.
