Q&A With Susan Ryles

The new Main Street Stone Mountain executive director envisions more art, restaurants and funky shops coming to Stone Mountain Village in the future. But first, finding funding for various initiatives is key.

Susan Ryles, the new executive director of Main Street Stone Mountain, recently shared her vision, hopes and goals for Stone Mountain Village with Patch: Q. For Main Street and the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) it's funding, funding, funding. We in the Village are not short on ideas to improve our fair little Village. Most of those ideas however, require funding which is in short supply. We will be exploring at a variety of funding options for Main Street and the …

L.A. Fitness, Burlington Coming to U.S. 78

The Evermore Community Improvement District is seeing growth.

Before long, there will be a new work out spot and another place to buy clothes and home decor along U.S. 78. L.A. Fitness and Burlington are moving into the Evermore Community Improvement District (CID). And that's not all. The grand opening of Stone Mountain Toyota's renovation is coming up in July, road improvements are continuing and other projects are on tap, said CID executive director Jim Brooks. Here's a rundown of some of the projects and changes in the district, which runs 7.5 miles starting from the Gwinnett-DeKalb line, has more than 1,600 businesses and 508 property owners: “We have known for quite some time that redevelopment and reuse and rebranding would be part of our corridor," Brooks said. Pastor: 'We've Got to Take Measures To Save Our Young People'

Victory for the World Church pastor Kenneth Samuel talks to Patch about his hopes for the Summit on Youth Violence and Prayer Vigil Wednesday night, nearly two weeks after a shoot-out in the church parking lot that left two people dead.

It was a tragedy that Kenneth Samuel said he'd never before witnessed in some 30 years of pastoring: police say two men fatally shot each other, and two others were injured, in the parking lot of Victory for the World Church after a funeral earlier this month. "We have reached an all-time low when people open fire in the sacred space of the church," Samuel told Stone Mountain-Redan Patch Tuesday. On Wednesday, June 20, Samuel hopes for community healing and solutions from faith leaders, elected officials and concerned citizens during the Summit on Youth Violence and Prayer Vigil at the church, from 7-9 p.m. "We've got to capture and help to guide the thinking of young people in regard to what options are available to them, and provide …

Meet the Owners: Harry and Sunita Patel of Kids R Kids #10

Harry Patel and his wife Sunita own Kids R Kids #10 in Stone Mountain-Gwinnett.

Last March, Patch ran a poll asking readers for the best preschool in Stone Mountain. Though it received glowing comments from parents and a healthy number of votes, Kids R Kids #10 on Old Tucker Road came in second place behind the preschool at Mount Carmel Christian Church. Owner Harry Patel actually took the time to write a comment on that article, very graciously congratulating Mount Carmel. Patch had to meet him. Little minds are getting prepared in a big way for further education inside Kids R Kids #10, just few steps away from Kroger. Patch recently took a tour of the center and got Harry Patel, who owns and operates the business with his wife Sunita, to share their experiences as owners of the franchise location. Patch: How long …
