'Star Trek Into Darkness' Draws Mixed Critics' Reviews

This "clunky" movie is showing at the AMC Stonecrest 16.

The premise, courtesy of the film's official website: When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew. MOVIE REVIEW: Tom Cruise's 'Oblivion' is a 'Moderately Clever Mindbender'

Oblivion is now playing at Lithonia's AMC Stonecrest 16.

Tom Cruise leads a cast of well known actors in his latest thriller, out this weekend. Oblivion is rated PG-13 and runs 126 minutes. It is now playing at the AMC Stonecrest 16. For more theater information, show times and pricing, click the links above. Here's what the critics are saying: "The good news: Here's a lavish, serious science-fiction picture, one that on occasion transcends big-budget hit-making convention to glance against grandeur...Which brings us to Tom Cruise, the not-necessarily-good news. However engaging its end-times mysteries, Oblivion is still a Tom Cruise movie." Alan Scherstuhl, Village Voice. Full Review "A moderately clever dystopian mindbender with a gratifying human pulse, despite some questionable narrative …

"Jurassic Park 3D," "Evil Dead": Trailers and Reviews

The re-release and the remake are playing at AMC Stonecrest 16.

This week we've got a compilation of reviews of two movies playing at AMC Stonecrest 16 in Lithonia. "Jurassic Park 3D" (Rated PG-13) Can you believe the movie "Jurassic Park," based on Michael Crichton's novel, is 20 years old? I remember holding onto my husband's arm rather tightly (and burying my face in his shoulder) during some of the more intense scenes. Here's what a few critics are saying about the re-release in 3D: The 3D conversion really does make you feel like you're watching a whole new movie. From a technical perspective, the conversion is remarkable. It's by far the best fake 3D I've ever seen, and I would hazard that it's better than the 3D on some films that were actually shot that way. -Mario Aguilar, Gizmodo It is …

'The Pirates! Band of Misfits' A Treasure Trove of Fun

A ship full of bumbling Pirates take us on a 3D Claymation animation trip worth the voyage.

A below average pirate captain (voiced by Hugh Grant) seeks to win the elusive "Pirate of the Year" award, but faces some strong competition in "The Pirates! Band of Misfits." From the folks who brought us Wallace and Gromit, the story is feather-light but strong enough to introduce the characters and establish their conflicts, which are pretty predictable. It's more of a comedy than an adventure, appealing to both children and adults. Such a film should be a crowd pleaser at the box office. Audiences love pirate movies. Toss in some quirky characters -- like a twisted Queen Victoria and Charles Darwin -- and you have an evolutionary success. The film is an enjoyable 90 minutes. The voice casting was mostly on merit and not on stunt …

Wrapped in Patriotism, 'Act of Valor' Wants You

Real Navy SEALs lock and load for the big screen, but will it have enough firepower at the box office?

Active-duty Navy SEALs, whose names have been changed to protect their identities, take on some bad guys in one of the most realistic action war movies ever in "Act of Valor." The film aims to put the audience "in the boots" of real Navy SEALs. Even many  of the bullets used in the film were "live fire." Without a real plot, though, the film relies on a first-person narration style to explain what's going on for most of the 90-minute movie. Drug dealers, bang. Terrorists, bang. People shooting at SEALs, bang. Anyone who gets in their way is "DOA." All you really need to know is that the SEALs are the good guys and they are out to get the bad guys, plain and simple. I suspect that most people who go see this film aren't really worried about…

'This Means War' is Disarming

Two young leading men duke it out over an Oscar-winning actress in a romantic action comedy that may have you saying, what was that?

Chris Pine and Tom Hardy play CIA operatives, and best friends, who suddenly find out that they are after the same girl, Reese Witherspoon, in "This Means War." Pine plays CIA operative FDR and Tom Hardy plays his CIA counterpart, Tuck, in this movie that is more of a bromance than anything else. The two buddies become quick enemies as they fight for the heart of Witherspoon, who plays the role of Lauren Scott. Using all the latest spy equipment at their disposal they do what they can to sabotage the other's chances. That, in a nutshell, is the movie. Witherspoon, an Oscar-winning actress, doesn't do much for her career in this film. In fact, it may just hurt it to some extent. Pine and Hardy play an unlikely duo as buddies on this …
