Armed Robbery Suspect Sought by Police

Detectives believe the man may be responsible for several business robberies in DeKalb.

The DeKalb County Police Department, based in Tucker, is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying a man suspected of robbing two businesses this week.  According a a press release, the suspect entered the Family Dollar store located at 3590 Panola Road on May 1 at approximately 11:30 a.m. The man was armed with a weapon and demanded money from the cash register. He then fled the location with an undisclosed amount of cash. The same person is believed to have entered a second business, Dollar General, 2566 Wesley Chapel Road, about 15 minutes later and robbed the location of cash.   Here's a roundup of business news happening around the Stone Mountain and Lithonia area: Improving Mountain Industrial Boulevard at Highway 78 The Stone Mountain Community Improvement District (CID) has plans to spruce up the Mountain Industrial Boulevard and Highway 78 interchange - and make it a lot safer, too. Design and planning is underway to install street lights at the busy traffic point, which has no night-time lighting, the CID said in a release about the effort. Are There Too Many Dollar Stores In Our Area?

When Stone Mountain-Lithonia Patch recently reported about a new Family Dollar store under construction on Panola Road, which will replace one just a few doors away, some readers were less than thrilled. Angela Smith commented: This is ridiculous. If you'll notice, they only put up the "dollar-type" stores on our side of town. There are no such stores in Buckhead and only one in Midtown. We need to start protesting this type of behavior. It only drops the property value of our homes. Get real, people. What does Family Dollar, Dollar General, Dollar Tree, etc. have to offer our community? Family Dollar Store Under Construction on Panola Road

The new store is slated to open by the end of the year, the company says. Stores typically hire 8-10 people.

A Family Dollar store is under construction on Panola Road across the lot from the shopping center where J.R. Crickets is located. The store is scheduled to open by the end of the year, a spokeswoman with the discount retailer told Patch. Family Dollar stores on average hire 8-10 team members and are about 8,000 square feet, said Bryn Winburn, public relations manager for the Matthews, N.C.-based company. Once open, the new store will replace the existing store nearby at 2657 Panola Rd., Winburn said. The new Family Dollar will be less than a mile away from the Lou Walker Senior Center and less than two miles from DeKalb Medical Center at Hillandale. New Stores Moving In, Creating Jobs

Family Dollar in Lithonia and Papa John's in Stone Mountain have put up their signs, started moving in.

There are some new jobs and more shopping and eating options coming to the Stone Mountain area. Family Dollar, which is moving into the old Eckerd store at Young Road and Panola Road in Lithonia, plans to hire 7-10 people at the new store, slated to open Oct. 6, a company spokesman said Wednesday. Papa John's is also setting up shop at a former Subway location in the Crowe's Crossing shopping center in Stone Mountain, anchored by Kroger. No word from Papa John's yet on when the location will open and how many people it will employ.
