In fact, Easter was named for the Saxon goddess known as, depending on the region, Eastre, Oestre or Ostara. She was the goddess of fertility, dawn and spring. I bet she had a killer garden! And guess what this fertility goddess’ sacred animal was? Yep, the rabbit.  The decorated egg--bless its little yolk--is synonymous with springtime and Easter in most cultures throughout history. Ancient Egyptians, Persians and Hindus believed all the world thrust forth from an enormous egg, and celebrated the season by gifting decorative eggs. For Christians, the egg, its hard shell …

This is a great experiment. The eggs in the red cabbage dye are turning blue. The eggs in the beet dye absorbed the vibrant color very quickly. We also tried yellow onion skins but had little success. Same with yellow peppers. Tried garam masala spice, it created a decent color but there was a spotty effect on the eggs. All in all, a very cool thing to try.   more ›

Easter Favorites from the German Bakery

A braided Easter bread is among the more popular items at Stone Mountain Village's staple restaurant. What are your favorite Easter foods?

What goodies are going to be on your Easter table this Sunday? When people seek Easter-time food from the Village Corner Bakery, Tavern and German Restaurant come by, they often choose a braided Easter bread with three eggs down the center, Carl Friese and Hilde Friese, owners of the staple eatery in Stone Mountain Village, told Patch during a recent impromptu stop. The three eggs are for the Trinity, Hilde Friese explained, and it's traditional in several European countries. Some make it with raisins, she said. Another thing people like to stock up on are sugar cookies decorated in spring time colors and shapes, such as tulips. Tell Patch: What are some of your favorite Easter foods?
