Op-Ed: Where is "WE the People"?: Response to DeKalb County School Board Suspension

Many of you know that up until now, I have been silent on the DeKalb County School Board issue as this a VERY complex situation and a case of first impression for Georgia. There are multiple players and "what ifs" but I feel comfortable enough to make a brief statement about the Governor's recent decision to suspend (he hasn't actually removed them yet as they have a 30 day appeal process) six (6) duly elected DeKalb County Board Members. I truly believe that the ONLY goal that any legislator in the DeKalb county delegation has is to maintain accreditation for DeKalb's school system. 'No Magic Wand,' Says Thurmond
DeKalb schools' interim superintendent holds his first meeting.
Newly-appointed interim school superintendent Michael Thurmond wasted no time on Monday night as he held his first meeting with board members at the district's Stone Mountain headquarters. “I do not have a magic wand,” Thurmond said, "but every day we will come with one goal in mind: to become better and to inspire and educate our children.” He joins the DeKalb School District at a difficult time - his predecessor's sudden departure, probation from SACS, and a continuing struggle to maintain accreditation. Thurmond promised to restore the reputation of DeKalb's schools, according to the AJC. Local Residents React to DeKalb Superintendent's Departure

Updated: Thursday, Feb. 7, 6:17 p.m. A statement has just been released by the DeKalb County School District: The DeKalb County Board of Education and Superintendent Dr. Cheryl Atkinson have mutually agreed to end their relationship effective Friday, February 8, 2013. Clayton Resident Details Impact of Losing Accreditation to Concerned Local Parents
Citizens gathered Tuesday to discuss the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools' decision to put DeKalb schools on probation, and what the future could hold if the school system loses accreditation.
The effects of a school system losing accreditation include businesses and residents moving out in droves, declining property values and a bad perception of the area, a speaker told group of concerned parents and citizens meeting at Hairston Crossing Library in Stone Mountain. The information came from someone who has seen it firsthand: Lisa Cameron of Clayton County, which lost its school accreditation in 2008. The gathering was organized to discuss how the community should respond to the recent report by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), which placed the DeKalb County School System on probation until December 2013. Melvin Johnson Sworn In As New District 6 School Board Member
Johnson takes the seat formerly held by Thomas Bowen.
DeKalb Board of Education District 6 member Melvin Johnson was sworn in Monday afternoon (Jan. 7) at the school district's headquarters, along with other newly-elected members Marshall D. Orson and James "Jim" McMahan. Pamela Speaks, who was re-elected to her seat, was also sworn in Monday. Schools in District 6 include Stephenson and Stone Mountain high schools; Freedom, Stephenson and Stone Mountain middle schools, and Hambrick, E.L. Miller, Pine Ridge, Redan, Rock Chapel, Rockbridge, Shadow Rock, Stone Mill and Stone Mountain elementary schools and Wynbrooke Theme School.

Petition To Oust DeKalb School Board Gains Momentum
Hundreds have signed an online petition. Take our Patch poll and tell us if you believe DeKalb's school board should be removed.
Less than two weeks after being placed on probation, the DeKalb County School Board is now the target of an online petition calling for their removal. CBS Atlanta is reporting that the petition has already received hundreds of signatures, including one from Tucker resident Jan Mixon, who said, "in light of recent developments, this might be the best approach. The loss of accreditation would have a tremendous impact not only on our schools but also on our property taxes. We want to keep DeKalb County strong." DeKalb resident Grace McKenna began the online petition, calling on Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal to replace the entire school board. School Board Delays Vote on Proposed Organization
The vote is delayed until Jan. 7, 2013
At Monday's meeting, the DeKalb County Board of Education decided to delay its vote on a working draft of the 2016-17 Proposed School Organization until Jan. 7, 2013. A second vote on the final draft will take place on Jan. 23, 2013 as previously reported. The delay allows the DeKalb County School District (DCSD) staff time to incorporate already received public suggestions and refine the working draft. The Board vote on Jan. 7 is to share the revised draft for public comment. The public information sessions will run from Jan. 8 through 17 across the five academic regions of the district. What does the lack of resignations say about the cancer, ah, people holding those 6 BOE seats?
