The Redan Lady Raiders scored 58 points on the final day of the Class AAAA Girls’ State Track Championships to overcome a 30-point deficit to defending champion Southwest DeKalb to capture the 2012 state title at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany. The Lady Raiders did not score a point in the first two days of competition, but exploded for 58 points once the teams hit the finals on the track on Saturday. Southwest DeKalb which had won four of the last five Class AAAA state titles scored 30 points in the field events led by Kenya Wheeler’s gold medal in the shot put (41-01.50). SWD, Dunwoody both captured their second consecutive Region 6-AAAA track championships on Wednesday.
The Southwest DeKalb Lady Panthers and Dunwoody Wildcats both captured their second consecutive Region 6-AAAA track championships on Wednesday at Panthersville Stadium. The defending Class AAAA state champions Lady Panthers won seven of the 16 events on the way to compiling 138 points to finish 45 points ahead of second place Dunwoody’s 93 points. Redan was third with 79 points following closely by Chamblee in fourth with 76. The Lady Panthers built up a hefty 70 points through three gold medals and two silver medals in the field events. Redan among schools to compete Wednesday, April 18; State Sectionals are set for Saturday, April 28.
The 2012 track season is winding down as all the DeKalb County track teams prepare for next week’s region track meets that qualify the athletes for the State Sectionals on Saturday, April 28. The Region 6-AAAA Championships began on yesterday, April 16 and continue through tomorrow, Wednesday, April 18 at DeKalb County’s Panthersville Stadium. Chamblee, Dunwoody, Lakeside, Lithonia, Miller Grove, Redan, Southwest DeKalb and Tucker are scheduled to compete. The meet begins at 5 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday beginning on Monday with the boys' field events and the girls’ running events preliminaries and 1600 meter run finals.
