The DeKalb County School District (DCSD) budget hearing scheduled for 3 p.m. on May 15 has been postponed until 12 p.m. on June 3. The hearing will accompany a DeKalb County Board of Education committee of the whole. The Board of Education will meet at 6 p.m. on June 10 for a called meeting at which the tentative budget may be adopted. The final adoption of the budget and tentative millage rate hearing will take place at 6 p.m. on June 26. All meetings will be held in the J. David Williamson Board Room, Robert R. Freeman Administrative & Instructional Complex, 1701 Mountain Industrial Blvd., Stone Mountain. The meetings will be televised on PDS-TV24 and streamed live right here. DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis, in partnership with the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce and the DeKalb County School District, has established the DeKalb County Educational Scholarship Fund for high school students. The fund will award multiple scholarships in amounts up to $5,000 to DeKalb County School District high school seniors who have been accepted into a two- or four-year college or vocational training program in Georgia. Scholarships will be awarded to students based on their financial need and merit. Students can apply for the scholarship now through April 19, 2013. The application is available here. Samuel Gladden entered C-Span's annual video documentary competition.
Miller Grove High School tenth-grade student Samuel Gladden will receive $250 for his Honorable Mention documentary, “Education: The Greatest Common Factor," entered in C-Span's national 2013 StudentCam competition. According to the press release from C-Span, middle school and high school students are invited to produce a five- to- eight minute documentary on a national policy issue in the annual competition, which has been around for nine years. In this year's competition, students were asked to answer this question: “What’s the most important issue the president should consider in 2013?” C-SPAN received 1,893 videos from more than 3,500 students across the U.S and Washington, DC., according to the release.

The two are among five principals announced Monday by the DeKalb County School District.
Principals Greg Goodwin of Redan High School in Stone Mountain and Yolanda Turner of Murphey Candler Elementary in Lithonia were among five regional principals of the year announced Monday by the DeKalb County School District. A district-wide winner will be announced on May 17 during a ceremony at Lakeside High. Gov. Nathan Deal has released the names of the 400 people who are interested in replacing the six recently-suspended DeKalb county school board members, and many of them are from Stone Mountain (72 applicants; there are an additional two people whose city is identified as Smoke Rise, which is in unincorporated Stone Mountain) and Lithonia (60 applicants). The DeKalb County School District will hold public hearings starting next week on plans to decommission 12 local schools over a five-year period. The 'master facility plan' proposes phasing out 12 instructional facilities: Austin Elementary, Avondale High, Clifton Elementary, DESA/Terry Mill, Fernbank Elementary, Meadowview Elementary, Midway Elementary, Ronald McNair Middle, Pleasantdale Elementary, Rockbridge Elementary (in Stone Mountain), Smoke Rise Elementary (in Stone Mountain) and Wadsworth Elementary. These schools will be replaced by the construction of new facilities and repurposing existing facilities, a DCSD press release stated. I am new to Stone Mountain and luckily do not have children of school age, otherwise I would seriously be thinking of moving to Cobb County!
