DeKalb Wants Resident Input on Zoning Code Update

Comments can be made online.

DeKalb county wants to know residents' thoughts about the zoning code update. The update "is to implement the policies of the DeKalb County 2015 Comprehensive Plan. Its goal is to create a user-friendly document and to balance greater design standards," the DeKalb County Planning & Sustainability website states.  According to the Medlock Area Neighborhood Association, the DeKalb Board of Commissioners will vote on the update on May 28, and it goes into effect August 2013. There is plenty to review about the update on the site, from public drafts to proposed districts and more. You can leave a comment online about the zoning code update.

CID To BOC: Establish Opportunity Zones Now

Stone Mountain CID is asking County Commissioners for an economic development tool.

Representatives of the Stone Mountain Community Improvement District (CID) are asking DeKalb County leaders to open access to a powerful tool for job growth. Later this month, Commissioners are expected to consider measures allowing for the establishment of opportunity zones for the first time. Opportunity zones are geographic designations where state-administered tax credits benefit businesses creating new employment. New and existing businesses could realize a $3,500 job tax credit in state income tax liability and payroll withholding for each new job during a five-year period. With a minimum requirement of creating only two jobs, an employer could receive a cumulative total of $35,000 in tax credits. According to CID President Emory …

Dekalb County CEO Burrell Ellis is coming to the poolhouse at Mountain Creek Swim Club today, Tuesday, June 19, to meet with constituents. The gathering at 6:30 p.m. will be hosted by Marsha Ashby, known to many in Tucker for her involvement in local issues.  The club is located at 2092 Mountain Creek Court in Stone Mountain. Television Pilot Filming in Lithonia

Project expected to wrap up later this month, county spokesman said.

A bit of Hollywood has come to South DeKalb County. If the project's impressive wooden structure constructed in the Carriage Park subdivision doesn't turn your head as you travel past it on Browns Mill Road, the production vehicles lining the residential street (as well as the fleet parked at Arabia Mountain High School nearby), big lights, and security will most certainly get folks' attention. Indeed, a television pilot is filming, confirmed Burke Brennan, DeKalb County's chief communications officer. He said work would wrap up later this month and that a company called Bonanza Productions is involved. Special Weather Alert: Possibly Wintry Mix Monday

This Special Weather Statement covers DeKalb county.

The National Weather Service at Peachtree City has issued a Special Weather Statement warning of a possible wintry mix Monday night into Tuesday morning. DeKalb county is included in this alert. According to Weather.com, the strong artic high which has affected the area for the last two days will gradually shift east, allowing for moisture to return by late Monday. Enough cold air is expected to be in place to result in a short period of sleet or snow, rain mix. No accumulations are expected, but there is still some uncertainty with the forecast so the NWS is encouraging everyone to check frequently. DeKalb County Under Tornado Watch Until Noon

DeKalb County among 79 counties in the state under National Weather Service Tornado Watch today

Strong thunderstorms rolled through the area this morning, causing the National Weather Service to issue a tornado watch for DeKalb County until noon. According to the weather service, the area the area is under a significant weather advisory for penny sized hail and 40 mile per hour winds until 9:30 a.m. Storms are expected through the day, but skies should clear sometime in the late afternoon.

Senior Pernell Whitehead has had an impact, too. Last week, he returned the second-half kickoff for a touchdown to start a Stephenson rally in a 34-14 win over Luella. Parents React to New Superintendent

Many parents commented with cautious optimism.

After over two years of searching, DeKalb County School System has a new superintendent. Following a heated discussion in which the gloves came off, tempers flared, and three school board members (Jesse Jay Cunningham, Donna Edler, and Sarah Copelin-Wood) walked out, with a divided 6-3 vote, the school board voted to ratify the contract for Dr. Cheryl Atkinson of Lorain, Ohio, on Monday morning. Dr. Atkinson is set to start in her new job on September 15. The three dissenting voters, Nancy Jester, Pam Speaks, and Don McChesney, have all pledged to give Atkinson their unwavering support despite their disapproval of her contract.
