Viewfinder: Winter Fun at Snow Mountain

You don't have to go north to enjoy some winter snow. Stone Mountain has plenty of winter fun nearby.

Last winter's week of freeze was very unusual for Atlanta. Most of the time when it snows here, it melts in a few days. So there's usually not much time to enjoy winter activities such as sledding, snowball fights and and snowman building. However, if you go to Stone Mountain Park now through Feb. 20, you can experience a wide variety of winter activities during your visit. During this time the park transforms the lawn with the laser show into Snow Mountain. Activities include tubing down the giant snow hill, snow fort and snowman building, snowball fights, making s'mores and cookie and cake decorating. After dark you can stroll through Crossroads Village and enjoy some of the over two million lights decorating the park as part of A Stone …

Ethiopian Christmas

The holiday season may be over for some, but for Ethiopian Christians, it was Friday.

Most of us have already packed up holiday decorations and recycled our Christmas trees, but for Ethiopian Christians in Stone Mountain and around the world, Christmas Day just passed on Friday, Jan. 7.  Ethiopian Christmas, called Ganna, falls on this day every year because of the Ethiopic calendar. Compared to the Gregorian calendar that is the U.S. standard, it has the same number of days in a year but divided into 13 months. Their New Year begins Sept. 11 by the Gregorian calendar. It's also behind the Gregorian calendar by seven or eight years, since their current year is 2003.  Despite falling on a different day, Ganna is celebrated much like Christmas in other denominations.
