Stone Mountain Drunk Driver Sentenced to 16 Years in APD Officer's Death

Chasity Nicole Jones pleads guilty to vehicular manslaughter in January 2012 accident that killed Atlanta Police Department Senior Officer Gail Thomas.

Tears were flowing during an emotional day in Fulton County Superior Court on Friday as Stone Mountain’s Chasity Nicole Jones admitted she was driving under the influence of alcohol last January when she hit and killed Atlanta Police Senior Officer Gail Thomas. Because of such, Jones was sentenced to the maximum of 16 years in prison. Jones, 23, was crying at the beginning of the court proceedings when she entered a non-negotiated guilty plea to one count of vehicular manslaughter and one count of failure to obey the directions of an officer in the Jan. 24, 2012 crash on Interstate 75/85 southbound at the Brookwood Interchange.   And she was fighting through tears as she addressed the court prior to her sentencing, as well. “There are no …

Update: Woman Pleads Guilty in DUI Crash that Killed Officer Thomas

Stone Mountain's Chasity Jones was indicted on thirteen counts, including DUI and homicide by vehicle in the first degree, in the January 2012 incident that claimed the life of Atlanta Police Senior Officer Gail Thomas of Austell.

Update: 1/11/13 @ 2 p.m.: Chasity Nicole Jones entered a guilty plea Friday in Fulton County Superior Court to one count of vehicular manslaughter and one count of failure to obey the directions of an officer in the January 2012 death of Atlanta Police Senior Officer Gail Thomas. A sobbing Jones apologized to the Thomas family, specifically the fallen officer's father and daughter, whom the 23-year-old Jones noted is the same age as she. Tears were streaming throughout the crowded courtroom, including down the cheeks of some of the many, many law enforcement personnel in attendance. Vehicular Homicide Suspect Indicted

Chasity Jones, 22, is accused in the death of an Atlanta police officer.

Vehicular homicide suspect Chasity Jones, the woman from Stone Mountain in Gwinnett County who is accused in the death of an Atlanta Police officer, has been indicted. As a result, she won't have a court hearing today (Feb. 9), the Fulton County Sheriff's Office said. Her indictment number has not been assigned to a Superior Court Judge yet, the Sherrif's office said. Atlanta Police say Gail Thomas, a 15-year veteran of the Atlanta Police Department, was struck and killed on the I-75/I-85 Brookhaven late last month by a vehicle driven by Jones, 22. Police say Jones blew a .16 on scene and refused consent for a state administered blood alcohol reading. The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported that the reading is twice the level considered …

Vehicular Homicide Suspect Denied Bond

Preliminary/bond hearing set for Feb. 9 for Chasity Jones, of Stone Mountain in Gwinnett County, who was charged in the death of an Atlanta police officer earlier this week.

The Fulton County Sheriff's office said a judge denied bond for the charge of vehicular homicide Thursday for Chasity Jones, of Stone Mountain in Gwinnett County, who is a suspect in the death of an Atlanta police officer earlier this week. Gail Thomas, a 15-year veteran of the Atlanta Police Department, was struck and killed on the I-75/I-85 Brookhaven Tuesday evening. Police say driver Jones, 22, blew a .16 on scene and refused consent for a state administered blood alcohol reading. The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported that the reading is twice the level considered to be too impaired to drive. Lorelei Jones found out from WSB about her daughter Chasity Jones, who is accused of first degree vehicular homicide, DUI and reckless driving.

WSB caught on video a mother's heartbreaking reaction to learning that her daughter, Chasity Jones, of Stone Mountain in Gwinnett County, is accused of driving under the influence, reckless driving and first degree homicide by vehicle. Senior Officer Gail D. Thomas was struck by a vehicle while assisting another officer at a traffic accident on the Brookwood Interchange ramp in between Midtown and Buckhead, according to a statement from police (see more on Midtown Patch). Thomas died at the scene. Lorelei Jones, the suspect's mother, told WSB in the video that she'd told her daughter not to drink and drive.
