The following are several local organizations' needs for volunteers or donations: Community and corporate mentoring at DeKalb Schools: DeKalb County Schools just went back in session this week, but it's never too soon to have mentors. According to the school system's website, there are opportunities for company employees and folks from local community organizations to volunteer as mentors to students on a one-to-one basis. . If you'd like to try it, prospective mentors must complete an application, a background check through the DeKalb County School District Public Safety department, and attend a mandatory four-hour training session, the site says. On Friday and Saturday, Aug. 10 and 11, there will be no sales tax on many things kids will need as they start the school year.
Parents and teachers will get a break at the cash register this weekend on back-to-school needs. The State of Georgia is bringing back its Tax-Free Holiday. On Friday and Saturday, Aug. 10 and 11, shoppers will be exempt from paying taxes on everything from school clothes to notebooks to notebook computers. Most clothing and footwear with a sales price under $100 is exempt. Computers, tablets, printers and other technology and accessories under $1,000 will avoid state sales tax. How I learned (the hard way) that it's better to say a "quick goodbye."
My heart raced as I peered through a window on the school gym door. Moments earlier, I had dropped my son off for his first day of preschool. It was a painful goodbye. He had cried and reached for me as I bravely handed him off to the teacher. In retrospect, I should have just left, but I wanted to make sure that he was okay. I took shelter in the gymnasium. I waited for someone, anyone, to walk by so I could beg them to peek in at my son. An unsuspecting stranger passed and I jumped in front of her. She was kind enough to check on my poor child but her report wasn't comforting. "Umm, he's crying, but it gets easier, I promise." I was the lone mom who remained at the school.
