The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) has awarded the city of Lithonia $24,000 in supplemental study funds "to create standards for streetscape designs and zoning code changes" according to a news release. Lithonia city is among nine communities to receive a total of $654,000 in Livable Centers Initiative Awards, the ARC release states. Two LCI grants of $120,000 each were awarded to: Medline Regional Activity Center (focusing on the area around DeKalb Medical Center) and Newnan Town Center. The City of Stone Mountain has received a $64,000 grant through the Atlanta Regional Commission's Livable Centers Initiative. The money will be used for a study to look at how to develop the city, said city manager Barry Amos. The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC), says through its Livable Centers Initiative (LCI), it has awarded 10 local communities a total of $796,000 in planning grants, which are meant to help "local governments and communities "create new quality growth plans that can seed new ideas for livability or help implement such community-developed visions."

Responding to Funny Farm's comment: Excellent point (even though I like the dog park)! Not only did the City spend the $20,000 to $25,000 on the dog park that they have "temporarily closed," they now say that they are looking for another location for a dog park. More money down the drain!   more ›
