The following are local volunteer opportunities and donation needs: Help Needed - Volunteers 1. Hands On Atlanta Day is this Saturday, Oct. 6. Here are some schools and organizations in Stone Mountain and Lithonia that could use some help that day (click on the links below for information on signing up): Allgood Elementary, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Woodridge Elementary, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Stephenson Middle, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Arabia Mountain Nature Preserve, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. 2. Allgood and Hambrick elementary schools and Champion Middle Theme School will receive certificates.
Three Stone Mountain schools are among the 25 in DeKalb County that have been named Title I Distinguished Schools by the Georgia Department of Education, the school system announced Thursday. Allgood Elementary, Hambrick Elementary and The Champion Middle Theme School are part of the group that received certificates for making Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for three consecutive years. Schools that have made AYP eight or more years receive a monetary award, which comes from federal funds. Title I schools have significant populations of students who are economically disadvantaged, DeKalb schools explained in the announcement.
