Brandon Baker and others will be recognized at the Braves 400 Fan Club's Annual High School All-Star luncheon.
Brandon Baker, a Redan High School student, is among the Atlanta area's top high school baseball players to be recognized at the Braves 400 Fan Club's Annual High School All-Star luncheon. The event will take place May 30 at the 755 Club, Turner Field. The guest speaker will be Frank Wren, the Braves' executive vice president and general manager, according to an e-mail about the luncheon. The Player of The Year and Coach of the Year will be announced at the end of the luncheon, the correspondence states. There are fifty valedictorian and salutatorian honors at the 19 DeKalb County School District high schools.
Twenty-three senior DeKalb County School District athletes are receiving the highest academic honors in their classes as they graduate this spring. There are fifty valedictorian and salutatorian honors at the 19 DeKalb County School District High Schools, including magnet programs at Chamblee, Columbia and Southwest DeKalb. Ten athletes lead their 2013 classes as the valedictorians and 13 more earned salutatorian honors showing they could perform in the classroom as well as in athletics. These athletes account for 46 percent of the top academic awards for 2013. Twelve of the 14 sports sponsored by DeKalb County were represented in this group. Redan scores 24 runs in quarterfinal sweep of Locust Grove.
Junior Miles Fore led the hit parade for the Redan Raiders as they scored 24 runs on 24 hits in a Class AAAA quarterfinal sweep of the Locust Grove Wildcats at Locust Grove on Tuesday. Fore went 4-6 at the plate with six RBIS and a triple in the two games to lead six different players who drove in two or more runs on the day as Redan won 11-1 and 13-3 to advance to the semifinals. A two-out rally in the top of the first inning in game one was a sign of things to come for the Raiders against the Wildcat pitching staff. Wesley Jones doubled with two out and Brandon Baker followed with a single to plate Jones for the early 1-0 lead. Football and cheer registration is open for the Central DeKalb Jaguars, each Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Wade-Walker Park in Stone Mountain, or online. A large sign at the entrance to Wade-Walker says registration is open to children ages 4 to 14. According to the website, registration ends Aug. 1.

The third annual DeKalb County All-Star Soccer games will be played at James. R. Hallford Stadium in Clarkston on Monday, May 20. The two games (girls and boys) match the top DeKalb County soccer players from Inside the Perimeter schools vs. Outside the Perimeter schools. The girls game kicks off the event at 5:30 p.m. as the OTP squad tries to break the ITP’s two game winning streak. The OTP squad is coached by Dunwoody’s Edgar Flores and assisted by Tricia Silvera and features some of the top scorers in the county including Southwest DeKalb senior Kristen Peagler who set the season scoring record for the county with 55 goals in 2013. The Redan Raiders are making their first appearance in the baseball state playoffs’ quarterfinals since the 2010 season as they travel to Locust Grove in the third round of the Class AAAA playoffs on Tuesday. The best-of-three series is set for a doubleheader beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday and a third game, if necessary is set for 5 p.m. on Wednesday. The Raiders (24-6), Region 6-AAAA runners-up, are coming off a second round sweep of Region 5 champion Columbus last in Columbus. The Raiders rallied for a 5-4 win in the opener and then pulled away 9-4 in the second game to get the sweep. Redan comes up short in defending Class AAAA state title.
Defending Class AAAA state champion Redan was trailing Marist by 22.50 points with four events to go but a valiant effort to retain its state title came up just 7.5 points sort in falling 57.50 to 50 to Marist at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany on Saturday. Redan put up a very solid 25 points led by a silver medal performance in the 4x400 meter relay (3:51.15) during those last four events, but Marist held on for the victory. Crystal Gray was part of the 4x400 relay team along with Tanzanie' Brown, Miyah Golden and Shequilla McClain while bringing home a gold medal in the 400 meter dash (55.85) and bronze medal finish in the 200 meter dash (25.03) in leading the Lady Raiders’ rally attempt. Team moves ahead in the second round of the Class AAAA high school baseball state playoffs.
The No. 5 ranked Redan Raiders traveled to No. 3 ranked Columbus in the second round of the Class AAAA high school baseball state playoffs and came away with a sweep to win the best-of-three series two games to none. The Raiders (24-6), the No. 2 seed from Region 6-AAAA, found themselves trailing Columbus (20-8) 3-0 after four innings in the first game. Then the bats came alive exploding for five runs in the top of the fifth to take a 5-3 lead. Tyler Layton got the scoring started with his two-run single and was followed by run scoring singles from James Nelson, Wesley Jones and Trega Williams.
