DeKalb County takes in thousands of refugees from around the world each year and the nationally-recognized International Community School was founded in 2001 in Avondale to help transition the children of these families into American life and academia. The students learn English while studying math, science and other subjects.

The Stone Mountain location, in the St. Michael and All Ages Episcopal Church, was opened in 2006 for grades five and six; the Avondale location now has kindergarten through fourth grade.

ICS is a charter school and places an emphasis on art, music, drama and physical education. All students are required to study a second language and those who are not native English speakers must first become proficient in English before learning Spanish or French.

Classrooms are small and typically have speakers of at least 10 languages. The school has an after-school program that offers sports, dance, drama, art and language classes. Parents can take part in Saturday classes, learning English and skills for navigating everyday life in their new country.
