Local MLK Day of Service Projects Brimming With Volunteers

Hands On Atlanta says hundreds are on a waiting list for the Jan. 16 service projects throughout greater Atlanta.

Like the rest of its Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service projects, Hands On Atlanta's three opportunities in Stone Mountain -- at , and -- are chock full of volunteers this year, a spokeswoman said.

In fact, there is a volunteer waiting list of up to about 350 throughout greater Atlanta for the organization's 50 service projects happening on Monday, Jan. 16, Martin Luther King Jr. Day. There are 3,000 volunteers signed up to participate in the projects.

"It's a great problem to have," said Kimber Burgess, director of development for Hands On Atlanta.

Burgess said the same nonprofit groups it works with on MLK Day need help all year round, so if anyone is interested in volunteer work, check back regularly with Hands On Atlanta.

At Mount Carmel, the Day of Service includes everything from completing arts and crafts projects for the school to building benches, cleaning, painting a mural, basic landscaping and planting.
