Help Needed: Literacy and Animal Rescue Organizations

Graduates of Leadership DeKalb also have opportunities to serve.

Volunteers can help teach people to read or improve the lives of homeless animals. There are several opportunities to do that and more in the Stone Mountain area:

  • Literacy Volunteers of Atlanta could use tutors, classroom teachers, classroom assistants, and others. Those interested in becoming a Basic Literacy or ESOL tutor need to complete a tutor application form, then fax or mail it to the literacy office.

Click here to call up the tutor application in Microsoft Word format and fax or mail it to the organization’s office: Literacy Volunteers of Atlanta, 246 Sycamore Street, Suite 110, Decatur, 30030. Literacy Volunteers of Atlanta conducts orientation sessions each month:  contact Aaron Hampton for exact dates and times at operationslva@lvama.org.

  • If you’ve got the time and heart to help the folks at Atlanta Animal Rescue Friends, Inc. (AARF) they can use help on tasks such as maintaining donation locations, food and donation pickups, animal transportation, and more. Click here to learn more.
  • Volunteers are needed to help with Saturday's Back to School Bash and Movies on Main (Justin Bieber: Never Say Never at dusk on the lawn of the pavilion) in Stone Mountain city. Volunteers are meeting at the Rock Gym at 10 a.m. Thursday morning to help prepare for the Back to School Bash. Contact kcumbie@comcast.net if you can help.
