Help Needed: Clean-up Volunteers, Sewing Supplies

The following are local organizations' needs for volunteers or donations.

The opportunities are in Stone Mountain and areas nearby, such as Lithonia, Clarkston and Lilburn.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Clean up, clean up, everybody...: Refugee Family Services needs at least five people on Friday, May 25, 8:30 a.m.-12 pm. to help with after-school/Pre-K clean up and clearing-out before painters and new supplies arrive to do some sprucing up. Please contact the volunteer coordinator this morning (Thursday, May 24) if you can lend a hand: rfsvolunteers@refugeefamilyservices.org

Sew much to do: Refugee Sewing Society based in Clarkston could use a variety of volunteers to assist in its sewing, bead and yarn classes (with tasks such as sorting, tagging jewelry and yarn products, etc.); general needs including mopping, setting out snacks, etc.; and a lot more. Calling all green thumbs: , the Hindu place of worship in Lilburn, could use volunteers to help with tasks such as landscaping, said its president, Harry Patel, If interested, reach Patel at: info.atlanta@usa.baps.org.

Have a heart for ART? There are quite a few options available at different times of day if you'd like to volunteer at : ushering at theatre productions, working the bar, hosting, and even bringing your corporate know-how to the table by becoming a board member.

DONATIONS

Bucks for the Bash: Yes, this is the last day of school for DeKalb public school kids, but it's never too soon to plan for the needs of the 2012-2013 year. The Back-to-School Bash in the City of Stone Mountain on July 28 could use monetary donations to purchase school supplies, including bookbags. Last year, the bash helped nearly 1,000 children through $4,450 in donations (all but $9 was spent on supplies, said city manager Barry Amos). This year, the need is expected to be even greater, he said: between 1,200 and 1,500 kids will need the supplies. Monetary donations are preferred so a sufficient amount of supplies can be purchased. Notions & Needles: Can you part with scissors, yarn, beads, needles, or even a working sewing machine (not housed in a cabinet, please)? Refugee Sewing Society could use them, and a whole lot more.
