Help Needed: Smiling Faces, Engraved Bricks

A weekly list of local volunteer and donation opportunities.

The following are local organizations' needs for volunteers or donations.

The opportunities are in Stone Mountain and areas nearby.

If your organization would like to be included, please e-mail the information to: Leslie.Johnson@patch.com.

Volunteer Opportunities

Smiling faces: Stone Mountain Visitors Center could use folks with "happy, friendly, smiling faces" who are proud of the Stone Mountain city community and a passion for sharing, said the center's Kim Cumbie. If you fit the happy bill, contact her at: kcumbie@comcast.net

Weeding & watering: Trees Atlanta needs help with weeding and watering seedlings as part of an extensive tree campaign, said Susan Pierce Cunningham, NeighborWoods Program Manager. Interested? Contact Cunningham at susan@treesatlanta.org

Mark your calendars: in a few months, Trees Atlanta will need volunteers to help with seedling plantings, which generally begin in late November through the end of March, Cunningham said. Helpers take on tasks such as getting trees planted, mulching the planting areas and staking off the area for protection from anything that could trample the trees, Cunningham explained. E-mail Cunningham if you'd like to be part of this effort, too.

Donation Opportunities

Deadline to Donate a Brick: If you want to donate a brick for the DeKalb County Public Library's engraved brick campaign, you'll need to order it by June 30.

The library system says engraved bricks are available for $100 each for a 4" X 8" brick in the library entry sidewalk at these branches: Hairston Crossing, Salem-Panola, Stonecrest and Tucker- Reid H. Cofer.

Personalized bricks can be inscribed with a patron's name, the name of a family, friend or company, or in honor or memory of a loved one.

Donate online or call 404-370-8450, ext. 2238 for more information.

What your money can do: says a $50 donation can provide up to ten new books to help students in its afterschool program; $150 can send two refugee students to summer camp for a week, and of course the help spreads even further the more you give.
