Things To Do With the Kids This Week

Check your local library for all kinds of kid-friendly, summer activities.

Find something for the kids to do this summer so you don't hear the dreaded words "I'm bored." DeKalb County Library branches in Stone Mountain-Redan offer lots of options:

Babies:

  • Building Blocks - Wednesday, June 13, 10-10:45 a.m., Redan-Trotti Library, 1569 Wellborn Rd., Lithonia. The youngest library patrons enjoy playtime and storytime. Groups cannot be accommodated for this program.

  • Story Time- Wednesday, June 13,  10:30-11 a.m. Hairston Crossing Library, 4911 Redan Rd., Stone Mountain. Bring little ones ages 3-5 to the library for stories and rhymes, fingerplays and songs. Open to first 15 participants.
  • Performing Parrots for a Young Audience - Wednesday, June 13, 1-1:45 p.m. , 952 Leon St., Stone Mountain. Presented by Brenda Bean of Parrot Productions. For ages 3-7. If you've got groups of 5 or more, call the library for an appointment: 770.413.2020.
  • Time for Tales - Wednesday, June 13,  11-11:45 a.m., Redan-Trotti Library, 1569 Wellborn Rd., Lithonia. Open to first 24 participants.For ages 3-5.

School Age: 

  • The Dream Big Craft & Story Hour - Wednesday, June 13, 3-4 p.m. Hairston Crossing Library, 4911 Redan Rd., Stone Mountain. For ages 6-12. Interesting titles and activities for the 6-12 year old set:

Open to first 15 participants. Groups of five or more need to set up an appointment  by calling the library:

  • Legos: Build and Race - Saturday, June 16, 1-2 p.m. and 2-3 p.m., Stone Mountain -Sue Kellogg Library, 952 Leon St., Stone Mountain. Note: Participants may attend only one of two sessions (see times above). Germaine Schweibinz will bring the Legos and show kids how to build a race car and zoom it to victory. For ages 5-12. There is a limit of 24 participants at each session. Admission tickets will be available 15 minutes prior to the program.
  • Parrots Doing Tricks - Wednesday, June 13, 2:30-3:15 p.m. 952 Leon St., Stone Mountain. For ages 8 and up. Presented by Brenda Bean of Parrot Productions. Groups of five or more will need to call the library for an appointment: 770.413.2020.
  • Afternoon Craft Hour - Monday, June 11, 3:30 -4:30 p.m. Redan-Trotti Library, 1569 Wellborn Rd., Lithonia. For ages 5-12. Open to first 24 participants.
  • Just Clownin With Gran E Luv -Wednesday, June 13, 2-3 p.m. Redan Trotti Library, 1569 Wellborn Rd., Lithonia. For ages 5-12. Open to first 48 participants.

Tweens:

  • Tween Vision Board Craft - Monday, June 11, 2-3:30 p.m. at Hairston Crossing Library, 4911 Redan Rd., Stone Mountain. "Tweens" (ages 9-12) will make a vision board that will guide them to realize their dreams. Open to the first right participants. If you've got a group of 5 or more, you'll need to call the branch for appointment: 404.508.7170.

Teens:

  • Afternoon movie, Alice in Wonderland (Rated PG) - Tuesday, June 12, 2-5 p.m., at Hairston Crossing, 4911 Redan Rd., Stone Mountain. For ages 13-17. Bring a snack and watch a flick. Open to first 40 participants.

July 24: Spirited Away. Rated PG.

Note: Copies of the book will be available at the Circulation Desk on a first-come, first-served basis.

  • Teen Anime Club - Tuesday, June 12, 6-8 p.m., Redan-Trotti Library, 1569 Wellborn Rd., Lithonia. For ages 13-17. Participants will review movies, hold discussions on manga, artistic methods and more. Open to first 24 participants.
