Region 6-AAAAA Getting Interesting As Season Moves Into Final Three Weeks

The 7-0 Martin Luther King Lions are at the top of the standings.

The Region 6-AAAAA playoff race is really heating up as the top teams
battle over the next three weeks for the four playoff spots.

The No. 2 ranked Martin Luther King Lions (7-0) are currently atop the
standings at 6-0 followed closely by Miller Grove (6-1, 5-1), Stephenson
(5-1, 5-1) and Tucker (6-1, 5-1) tied for second.

The four teams match up again this week headlined by the Lions against
Stephenson in a rematch of last year’s exciting 50-49 last second win by
the Lions.

The game is set for telecast on GPB-TV (8) at 8 p.m. from Hallford
Stadium. The Lions are coming off a 51-0 shutout, their fourth of the
season, while looking to extend their streak against Stephenson to three
consecutive wins. The Lions won 26-24 in 2010 and their win on Blake Tibbs
80 yard kickoff return last season evened the series at three games apiece.

The Jaguars were ranked No. 3 heading into last week’s game against
Miller Grove and looking to set up a battle of undefeated teams, but the
Wolverines would not go away in a 32-29 come-from-behind victory.

The Wolverines who lost an early season region game to Mays has reeled off
five consecutive victories, including the upset of Stephenson last week in
the two schools first ever meeting, to move into a three-way tie with
their next opponent in the No. 4 ranked Tucker Tigers and Stephenson.

Tucker rebounded from a disappointing 13-6 loss in the first ever meeting
with Stephenson two weeks ago with a 29-0 shutout of Southwest DeKalb to
remain in the race for a host role in the first round of the playoffs with
games against Miller Grove, M.L. King and Mays remaining.

Tucker and the Wolverines meet at Adams Stadium on Friday night at 8 p.m.
with the winner looking to knock off the Lions in the final two weeks of
the season. Tucker holds a 6-0 lead in the series after last season’s
36-7 win.

Southwest DeKalb (4-3, 3-3) looks to stay in contention for a playoff spot
as they face Arabia Mountain (2-5) in a key Region 6-AAAAA game for the
Panthers at Panthersville Stadium at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night. The two
teams are meeting for the first time in the history of the two programs.

The Panthers trail Mays (4-3, 4-2) by one game in the standings and the
four leaders by two games. Southwest has games against Miller Grove and
Dunwoody left in the final two weeks of the season.

The McNair Mustangs (3-4) get a chance to pull an upset on television as
they travel to Blessed Trinity (6-1) on Thursday night as the WSB-TV
Thursday Night Football game. The game is set for a 7:30 p.m. start.
