Redan's Brandon Phillips Heading to MLB's All-Star Game

Former Redan High School player picked up his second consecutive selection to the Major League Baseball's (MLB) All-Star Game.

Former DeKalb County and Redan High baseball standout Brandon Phillips picked up his second consecutive selection to the Major League Baseball’s (MLB) All-Star Game set for Tuesday, July 12 at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona.

Phillips, the starting second baseman for the Cincinnati Reds, was chosen as a reserve for the second consecutive season. He went 0-1 in his only All-Star plate appearance in the 2010 game.

The now two-time all-star is currently batting .292 with 8 homeruns and 45 RBI for the Reds.  He is a career .269 hitting with 120 homeruns and 487 RBI in 9 plus seasons playing for the Indians (2002-2005) and Reds (2006-present) after being drafted as a shortstop in the second round of the 1999 MLB draft by the Montreal Expos.

Phillips had a career high batting average of .288 in 2007 as he hit a
career high 30 homers and collected 94 RBI and a career high 32 stolen bases. He had a career high 98 RBI in 2009.

The Reds’ second baseman has become recognized for his impressive play in the field as well as his offensive prowess collecting a pair of Gold Gloves (2008, 2010).

Phillips has played a big role in several of ESPN’s WebGems over his
career with barehanded grabs, behind the back flips and between the legs throws and not to mention throwing from a sitting position after making a big stop.

The former Redan Raider had a stellar high school career including leading DeKalb County in several seasonal categories from 1997 to 1999. He led DeKalb in homeruns (12), runs scored (48) and RBI (50) during an outstanding junior season and capped his career with a county leading .610 batting average as a senior in 1999.

He played for current Redan High Principal Greg Goodwin during his time at the DeKalb school.
