High School Football Predictions

Stephenson, Stone Mountain and Redan should be winners this week.

I was humbled a bit last week in my predictions of high-school football games played in Patch coverage areas from Stone Mountain to Cumming.

After a can-you-believe-it 21-3 record the first week, I cooled off to a 16-6 mark last week (38-9 overall). I only missed badly on one pick. Really.

So, let's lace 'em up for another week. Are you ready?

Stephenson at Tift County: State-ranked Stephenson takes a trip down I-75 to take on an undefeated Tift County team (3-0) that’s frequently a fast starter only to become an also-ran in Region 1-AAAAA. Stephenson (2-0) looks ferocious with its 11 Division I commitments and big-play defense. The Cedar Grove team that the Jaguars beat 41-12 last week is actually a pretty good team. Conversely, the Shiloh team that Tift County beat 28-14 last week may not win more than two games. This is an easy pick. Stephenson 31, Tift County 14.

Stone Mountain at Washington: We here at Patch try to be as loyal as we can to our local teams, but we also don’t mind jumping on the bandwagon. If loyalty and front-running combine, well, we really like that, too. We really like what the Stone Mountain Pirates have accomplished so far. The Pirates (2-0) are the lone undefeated team in Region 5-AAA, Division B, and proving they should be considered in state rankings. A win this week sets up a great matchup against Cedar Grove on Sept. 17. Stone Mountain 28, Washington 14.

Dunwoody at Redan (Saturday): Two 0-2 teams square off and let’s just hope there’s not a tie. Redan won last year’s game 12-10 and the Raiders seem to have some offensive firepower despite the record. Notice the 455 total yards the Raiders gained in a 42-41 loss to Lithonia two weeks ago. Redan’s play-makers will decide this one. Redan 23, Dunwoody 17.
