Football Recap: Stephenson Gets 150th Victory

Dallas Rivers had two rushing touchdowns and Dexter Neal caught a pair of touchdown passes.

Stephenson started football 18 years ago with Ron Gartrell heading up the fledgling program as it went 1-9 in the inaugural season.

Now in his 18th season at the school the program has averaged 8.33 wins per season in winning 150 games following the 31-7 victory over Miller Grove on Friday night at Hallford Stadium.

Dallas Rivers had two rushing touchdowns and Dexter Neal caught a pair of touchdown passes in the landmark victory for the Jaguars and Gartrell.

Gartrell is 185-99 overall in 26 seasons including his stop at Shamrock before taking over the Stephenson program in 1996. The program has lost just 54 games in that time span.

The win kept the Jaguars (6-1, 5-1) in line for a No. 2 state playoff seed with the big rivalry game against the Martin Luther King Jr. Lions coming up on Friday at Hallford Stadium.

The Lions (6-1, 5-1) set up a big match up for that coveted home playoff game by knocking off Lakeside (1-6, 1-5) 31-7 on Saturday night.

Tucker 60, SW DeKalb 14
The No. 1 ranked Tucker Tigers (7-0, 6-0) kept one step ahead of its DeKalb County rivals with a 60-14 Region 6-AAAAA victory over the Southwest DeKalb Panthers (2-5, 2-4) on Friday.

Joseph Farrar tossed touchdown passes to Akeem Peters and Yaquis Shelley and Elijah Sullivan ran for two more scores to lead the Tigers in the win. Dominick Sanders and Raquan Rush added touchdown runs and the defense added a safety.

St. Pius 38, Cedar Grove 12
In a battle for the top spot in Region 6-AAA, Cedar Grove could not get on track against St. Pius in a 38-12 loss on Friday.

St. Pius jumped out early and the Saints (6-2, 3-1) managed a pair of late scores on a 30 yard fumble return by Bryson Allen Williams and a touchdown run by Anthony Lattimore to get on the scoreboard.

Mays 19, Dunwoody 7
The Dunwoody Wildcats put a scare into Mays getting out to a 7-0 halftime lead before falling 19-7 in a Region 6-AAAAA contest.

Mays (5-2, 5-1) had to rally in the second half and needed an interception return late in the game to seal the victory as the Wildcats (1-6, 1-5) were driving.
