Bethune and Stephenson win big in Trail to the Title opening round games

The 2011 DeKalb County Middle School Football Trail to the Title opened first round last Saturday as four teams advanced to the semifinals with victories at Hallford Stadium Region 1 champion Bethune (7-0) rolled past Region 2 runner-up Peachtree by a score of 54-0 to advance to the semifinals for the third time in four seasons.

The Lions made the 2008 championship game, but came up short against Miller Grove. Region 2 champion Stephenson (7-0) also remained undefeated on the season with a 36-0 shutout of defending champion Miller Grove (3-4).

The Jaguars and Miller Grove both have three Trail to the Title championship trophies and Stephenson is looking for a record setting fourth after last winning in 2009.

Columbia (5-2) entered the first round as the Region 3 champion and defeated Tucker (5-2), the Region 1 runner-up, in a touch 14-6 battle.

Columbia advances to the semifinals for the third consecutive season. Cedar Grove (6-1) came into the first round as the Region 2 runner-up and took on Region 4 champion Druid Hills (5-2) on the way to a 14-7 victory.

Cedar Grove is in the semifinals for the second consecutive season.

Semifinals for the Trail to the Title set for Saturday

The semifinals of the Trail to the Title middle school football championship are set as the teams square off on Saturday, October 29 at Hallford Stadium.

The first game pits Region 3 champion Columbia (5-2) against Region 1 champion Bethune (7-0) in game set for a 9 a.m. kickoff on Saturday.

The Columbia Eagles had won four consecutive games to claim the region title as well as advancing to the semifinals for the third consecutive season.

The Bethune Lions are in the semifinals for the third time in four seasons have reeling off seven consecutive victories this season including last week's 54-0 shutout of Peachtree.

The second game of the semifinals is set for 10:30 a.m. and features the top two teams from Region 2 with a combined record of 13-1. Region runner-up Cedar Grove (6-1) takes on Stephenson (7-0) in a rematch of Stephenson's 16-6 win in the final regular season game of the season.

Cedar Grove slipped past Region 4 champion Druid Hills 14-7 to advance to the semifinals for the second consecutive season while Stephenson knocked off defending champion Miller Grove 32-0.

Semifinals Saturday, Oct. 29 at Hallford Stadium Game 5: Columbia (5-2) vs. Bethune (7-0), 9 a.m. Game 6: Cedar Grove (6-1) vs. Stephenson (7-0), 10:30 a.m.
