DeKalb Schools Football: Redan Falls to Chamblee; Pirates Face Towers

Chamblee 35, Redan 21

The Chamblee Bulldogs jumped out to a 21-7 halftime lead on the Redan Raiders and held the 14-point lead to take a 35-21 Region 6-AAAA victory at Panthersville on Thursday night. The Bulldogs improved to 3-3 on the season while Redan fell to 2-4.

The Southwest DeKalb Panthers kept their playoff hopes alive while dashing the Dunwoody Wildcats' chances with a 24-7 victory on the Thursday Night High School Game of the Week telecast from North DeKalb Stadium on Thursday.

The Panthers scored twice in the final 1:03 of the first half to take a 10-0 advantage into the break.

Southwest DeKalb quarterback Jalil Young helped the Panthers take advantage of a missed field goal by Dunwoody by hitting John West Grant on a 41-yard pass play down to the Dunwoody 25 which set up Toran Davis' two-yard plunge for the go-ahead score with 1:03 left in the half. Marvin Ellis tacked on the extra point for a 7-0 Panther lead.

Just seconds later Southwest DeKalb's Bryant Thomas recovered a Dunwoody fumble at the Wildcat 24. Following an eight-yard run by Kori Thomas, Ellis came on to hit a 33-yard field goal as time ran out in the half for the 10-0 Panther lead.

The Panthers stopped Dunwoody on the opening possession of the second half and put together a 14-play, 65-yard drive for a touchdown. Young was ruled in on a one-yard sneak for the score as the Wildcats thought they had stopped the Panthers on a fourth and goal from the one. Ellis' point after made it 17-0 with 2:38 to play in the third quarter.

The Wildcats got on the board by taking advantage of a Panther fumble which Nick Willis recovered at the Southwest 15-yard line. Temyrick Mosley ran for 14 yards to the one and Justin King snuck in from that point to cut the lead to 17-7 following Matthew Rather's point after touchdown with 10:05 to play in the game. Malik Wright took over for the Panthers from that point carrying the ball five times for 68 yards to the Dunwoody 11 where Kori Thomas went the final 11 for the game sealing touchdown.

Ellis capped the drive with his kick for the 24-7 final. Wright finished the night with 150 yards on 17 carries for the Panthers while the Panther defense held Dunwoody to just 35 offensive plays and 133 yards of total offense.

Miller Grove 32, Douglass 7 The Miller Grove Wolverines stayed in line with Southwest DeKalb in a tie for the fourth and final Region 6-AAAA playoff spot with their 32-7 victory over Douglass at Hallford Stadium on Thursday.

The Wolverines (4-2) pulled away from a 7-0 halftime lead to take the victory and set up a possible winner takes all game with Southwest DeKalb on October 29.
