Basketball: Undefeated Lady Raiders Play Columbia

The Redan team is now 11-0.

Jamese Abney scored 19 points to lead the Redan High School Lady Raiders to a 60-42 Region 6-AAAA home victory over Chamblee on Tuesday.

The win improves the No. 2 ranked (MaxPreps) Lady Raiders to 11-0 on the season and on a collision course in Region 6A-AAAA action against Class AAAA No. 1 ranked (MaxPreps) Columbia on Friday at Columbia. Redan forced 11 first half turnovers and Brea Elmore scored 11 points as the Lady Raiders ran out to a 28-13 halftime lead.

Trailing 4-3 with 4:38 to play in the first quarter Redan went on a 12-2 run to finish the period with Abney hitting a three-pointer and Elmore completing a three-point play in the run.

Jada Byrd started the second period just like she ended the first with a layup to help the lead expand to 13 early in the quarter. Elmore had a three-pointer and a drive to the basket before Byrd added another easy basket on a feed from Elmore for the 28-13 halftime lead.

Elmore’s three with 3:05 left in the third period made it a 38-16 Redan lead. Chamblee’s Candace Rhodes, who hit for a game-high 23 points, hit three from behind the arc in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough to overcome the big advantage built by Redan in the first three-quarters. Elmore finished with 14 points and Byrd added 10 for Redan. Chamblee fell to 9-4 on the season.

The 5:30 p.m. tipoff at Columbia on Friday pits the top two ranked teams in Class AAAA girls’ action with the lead in Region 6A-AAAA on the line. Columbia was 9-2 heading into Tuesday’s game against Lithonia following a strong runner-up finish in the Title IX Tournament in Washington D.C. over the holidays.

(B) Chamblee 69, Redan 55
The Chamblee Bulldogs improved to 7-4 on the season with a 69-55 win over the Redan Raiders (1-7) in Region 6A-AAAA play to open the night of basketball at Redan.

Jade McClendon hit for 19 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and Thomas Oglesby hit for 17 points and grabbed 7 rebounds to pace the Bulldogs to the win.

Chamblee took the lead for good at the 3:50 mark of the first quarter at 8-7 on a pair of free throws by McClendon as the Redan fell behind 19-15 heading into the second period. Christian Haye pulled Redan within four at 27-23 with a three-pointer to open the second half, but McClendon went to work on the boards to score six pints and Oglesby hit for four more to push the lead to 45-34 with one quarter to play.

Oglesby got hot in the fourth quarter hitting for 11 points as the Bulldogs would not allow the Raiders to get closer than nine points the rest of the way. Khalil Haynes hit for 18, Christian Haye 16 and Angelo Jackson 13 to lead Redan in the loss.
