Alpharetta Turns Back West Forsyth

Raiders hand Wolverines their first loss of the season, a 27-14 decision in a key Region 6-AAAAA showdown.

Quarterback Joshua Dobbs threw four touchdown passes to lead Alpharetta to a 27-14 win over previously unbeaten West Forsyth Friday night in a showdown of the top two teams in Region 6-AAAAA at Alpharetta High School.

The win lifted the Raiders (5-1) into sole possession of first place in the region with a 2-0 league record. West Forsyth (also 5-1) is 1-1 in the region.

Two of Dobbs’ scoring passes came in the third quarter after West Forsyth had tied the score at 14-14, including a 79-yarder to Nevin Harton that proved to be the winning points. Carlos Burse caught two touchdown passes for the Raiders, who have now won four straight games.

The Raiders got on the scoreboard first when Dobbs connected with Adam Schildhammer for a 25-yard touchdown and an early 7-0 lead.

The Wolverines immediately went on the offensive when running back Lance Belue took the ensuing kickoff all the way down to the Alpharetta 34, but on the Wolverines' first play from scrimmage, quarterback A.J. Erdely's pass was intercepted by Schildhammer, giving the ball back to the Raiders.

However, on third-and-11 from their own 17, the Raiders fumbled and the ball was recovered by West Forsyth. Two plays later, West Forsyth’s Blake Roberts scored from the 1 to tie the game at 7-7.

The Raiders turned A.J. Erdely’s second interception into their second score. After the turnover, Alpharetta drove inside the Wolverines 10. Then on third-and-goal, Dobbs found Burse for a 7-yard touchdown and the Raiders enjoyed a 14-7 halftime lead.

West Forsyth got the ball to start the second half, and wasted no time driving for the tying score, a 17-yard run on first-and-10 by Jake Wieczorek.

Alpharetta regained the lead on its next possession when Dobbs connected with Harton for the 79-yarder, giving the Raiders a 21-14 lead.

Dobbs found Burse again for another touchdown pass near the end of the third quarter to give the Raiders a comfortable 27-14 lead.

Alpharetta will play at Milton next Friday, while West Forsyth faces Northview at home.
