2012 DeKalb County Cross Country Championships Set for Tuesday

The DeKalb County Varsity Cross Country Championships are being moved from Arabia Mountain High to Druid Hills Middle School due to storm damage on the Arabia course.

The 2012 DeKalb County Cross Country Championships are set for Tuesday, Oct. 9 and teams had a final tune up at Arabia Mountain last week.

Lakeside dominated the second boys’ and girl’s varsity races to cruise to an easy sweep at Arabia Mountain.

Seven Vikings finished in the top nine of the boys’ race led by Dawit Alemu (18:51.72) and Will Smith-Purcell (18:59.40) who took second and third, respectively, behind Clarkston’s Hussen SAdik (18:31.09).

Clarkston’s Muhozi Aimable took fourth in 19:10.85 and the next five runners were all from Lakeside to seal a 23-50 win over the Angora’s.

Lakeside was the only full team in the girls’ race and also claimed seven of the top nine spots on the day led by winner Jennifer Cora (21:05.15) who ran the fastest girls’ time in DeKalb County this fall. Cora was followed by teammates Hayley Keadey (21:34.78) and Victoria Thompson (23:05.36) in second and third. Cedar Grove’s Christian Pryor was fourth in 23:43.09.

Stone Mountain took the opening boys’ race at Arabia Mountain by a score of 27-36 over Redan with Tucker following in third with 47. Abel Abay (18:31.93), Nahome Abera (18:43.38), the defending county champion, and Abdullahi Ahmed (18:55.67) made it a sweep of the top three individual finishes for Stone Mountain.

Redan took the next three spots as Keith Terry (19:16.80), Cedric Roberts (19:25.90) and Micah Richards (19:3522) followed each other across the finish line.

Tucker’s Ebenezar Agaro (19:53.91) and Damiyan Bush (20:20.37) came across behind the Redan trio to take seventh and eighth overall.

The Redan Lady Raiders nipped the Tucker Lady Tigers 34 to 35 in the girls’ first varsity race despite a trio of Tucker runners taking the top three spots. Naima Jackson was first in 22:54.87 followed by her sister Nuba Jackson in 22:55.28 and teammate Leigha Long in 25:55.42.

Redan’s sophomore duo of Miyah Golden (26:03.60) and Kimberly Johnson (27:07.09) began the Redan rush to victory as the Lady Raiders took six of the next 10 finishes.

Druid Hills Middle School was the site of the DeKalb County Junior Varsity Cross Country Championships on Thursday, Oct. 4.

The meet will start on Tuesday, Oct. 9 with the boys running at 5:15 p.m. and followed by the girls at 5:45 p.m.
