Stone Mountain Patch regularly features an outstanding kid, teen or a group of them. The kids, who are chosen from readers’ suggestions, have earned various noteworthy achievements, from being recognized as good citizens to winning awards.
This week, our Whiz Kids are 12 fifth-graders who make up ’s Student Council. There are six boys: Taquel Young, Trent Miller, Noel Nguyen, Tyrell Scott, Eric Jones and Caymen Johnson. And, there are six girls: Chanelle Hawkins, Alexcia Washington, Christian “Chrissy” Johnson, Faith Baker, Ayana Walcott and Destiny Smith.
Their accomplishments are aplenty.
First, they were chosen for Student Council after each being recommended by three teachers for the new role. Teachers base their recommendations on the student’s character, citizenship and attitude.
“They are all really good kids, so why not give them a chance to shine in a leadership role?,” said Jessica Lembach, Student Council sponsor and Discovery Program teacher.
Second, they have become role models for the rest of the student body, especially those in the younger grades. The group of 12 all agree that being a role model is one of the most enjoyable aspects of the job.
“The little kids see their red shirts and think they are practically teachers,” Lembach said.
Teachers don’t hesitate to ask members of the council for a helping hand when they need assistance.
The young leaders have helped the students in a major way, too.The Student Council’s primary role is serving as liaisons between the student body and Principal Jeanette Roberts. The Council visits classrooms twice a month to talk to the other kids to see what they would like to see improved in the school. Then, once a month, the Council sits down with Roberts and other administrators to share the students’ ideas.
Thus far, the fifth-graders have not only asked for, but they have also been heard when it comes to better food, chairs and tables in the cafeteria as well as a Clean-Up Day, which administrators are now planning for next school year.
“They do a really good job,” said Lembach.
So, what makes the Student Council kids awesome? Destiny Smith, for instance, says she is a good listener and follows directions, and Taquel Young says the same. Noel Nguyen says that he’s mature and responsible; meanwhile, Chanelle Hawkins says that she is kind and honest.
