Three Saturday Wins Put 11 DeKalb Teams in Sweet 16

DeKalb County high school basketball teams made another good showing in the first round of the GHSA Basketball State Tournament winning of three of four games on Saturday night.

Southwest DeKalb, Martin Luther King Jr. and Towers picked up wins at home on Saturday night to give the DeKalb County school district 11 representatives to the Sweet 16 round of the state playoffs.

The No. 9 ranked Martin Luther King Jr. Lions needed three overtimes to put away Lowndes County (14-14) 87-78 for their first playoff victory since their 2007 run to the Class AAAAA Final Four.

The Lions (20-9) will host South Cobb (14-14), the No. 2 seed from Region 4, which defeated Jenkins 79-74 on Saturday to advance. Southwest DeKalb (19-9) put the clamps on Osborne (23-6) in the fourth quarter to rally for a 70-58 Class AAAA playoff victory.

While the defense held Osborne, which was leading 53-49 at the end of the third quarter, to just five points senior power forward William "Shaq" Goodwin scored 13 of his game-high 29 points to fuel the offensive comeback by the Panthers.

The Panthers travel on Wednesday to take on Cedar Shoals (20-9) which defeated Sequoyah 66-62 to move into the Sweet 16. The Towers Titans (20-8) had a tough first round Class AAA battle with LaGrange (18-11) winning 61-59 to win their first playoff game since 2002 in their first playoff appearance since 2003.

Tierre Smith and Brett Oakman teamed up for 15 and 13 points, respectively, to lead the Titans in the win. The Titans advance to take on No. 2 ranked Allatoona (25-4) on the road in a game that could be played in a doubleheader on Tuesday or Wednesday.

The Chamblee Bulldogs (20-9) had a tough task travelling to No. 9 ranked Douglas County (26-3) on Saturday and came up short in an 83-72 loss to end their season.
