Standout Scholars:Stone Mountain Natives Receiving Degrees and Honors

Emory University, Emory at Oxford, Auburn and Georgia Southern announce local students' accolades.

Bright and talented Stone Mountain natives are making their mark at colleges and universities.

Here are several students who have earned degrees and received other honors and responsibilities this year:

Emory University

The following received a degree from Emory University in Atlanta, Ga., on Dec. 17, 2011.

Makeen Sabree of Stone Mountain, Ga. (30083), son of Haazim Sabree and Djameela Sabree, received a Bachelor of Arts from Emory College of Emory University.

Veketa Smith of Stone Mountain, Ga. (30087), received a Master of Medical Science from the School of Medicine of Emory University.

Veketa Smith of Stone Mountain, Ga. (30087), received a Master of Public Health from the Rollins School of Public Health of Emory University.

Emory at Oxford

Chinedum Eto of Stone Mountain, Ga. (30087), son of Joseph Eto and Patricia Eto, received an Associate in Arts from Oxford College of Emory University.

Kiah Bond of Stone Mountain, Ga. (30087), daughter of Dr. Vincent Bond and Dr. Marilane Bond, was named to the Honor List of Oxford College for the 2011 fall semester. Students must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher to be named to the Honor List.

The following students were named to the Merit List of Oxford College, for the 2011 fall semester. Students must earn a grade point average of 3.0 or higher during the previous semester to be named to the Merit List.

Althea Roy of Stone Mountain, Ga. (30087), daughter of Robert Bingham-Roy of Stone Mountain, Ga. (30087) and Lynne Morelock-Roy,

Ian Horton of Stone Mountain, Ga. (30087), son of Dr. John Horton and Mary Hoton,

Auburn University at Mongomery

Laketa Riddle Barwick of Stone Mountain recently graduated from Auburn University at Montgomery with a Master of Education degree.

Georgia Southern University

Markus Cleveland, was invited to attend Georgia Southern University’s Scholars’ Day, a special event honoring outstanding high school seniors.

The Georgia Southern University chapter of Phi Eta Sigma, a national honor society for college freshmen, has initiated 404 new students. To be eligible, initiates earn a minimum GPA of 3.6 while enrolled full-time. The University is proud of these high achieving students and the outstanding freshman class. Among those achieving this honor were:
