Four DeKalb Baseball Teams Kickoff State Playoffs This Week

Redan opens play first with a Class AAAA doubleheader at East Paulding on Thursday, May 3.

The 2012 GHSA Baseball State Championships begin this week with four
DeKalb County teams participating in the first round best-of-three series.

(20-6) opens play first with a Class AAAA doubleheader on the road
at East Paulding (17-9) on Thursday (May 3) beginning at 4:30 p.m.  A
third game, if necessary, will be played at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday (May 5).

and East Paulding met on March 12 in a game won 8-1 by the
Raiders.

Redan is led at the plate and on the mound by junior pitcher/infielder
Wesley Jones. Jones is fifth in the county in batting average at .516,
second in RBI with 29 and in the Top 5 in doubles with eight. He is 3-1 on
the mound in 34 2/3 innings with a 1.41 earned run average, 42 strikeouts
and 19 walks.

The Dunwoody Wildcats (17-9) are the only DeKalb team hosting in the first
round as they face Class AAAA No. 8 ranked Pope (20-6) in a doubleheader
on Friday (May 4) beginning at 5 p.m.  A third game, if necessary, is set
for a 3 p.m. start on Saturday (May 5).

The Wildcats are led at the plate by Jared Martin who is batting .360 with
a DeKalb leading four homeruns on the season to go with 22 RBI and seven
doubles.  The Wildcat pitching staff is headed by James Cunningham who is
5-2 on the season with a 1.93 earned run average. Cunningham has 26
strikeouts and just eight walks in 29 innings on the mound.

Chamblee (17-8-1) is the third DeKalb team in the Class AAAA state
playoffs and travel to No. 7 ranked Alexander (20-5) for a 4 p.m.
doubleheader on Friday. A third game, if necessary, is set for 12 p.m. on
Saturday.

The Bulldogs pitching staff is led by junior Patrick Gaulden has pitching
47 1/3 innings striking out 37 and walking 15 while compiling a 1.32
earned run average and an 8-1 record.  The hitting lineup is led by a pair
of sophomores in Andrew Henry (.371) and Jared McKay (.360) with 14 and 16
RBI, respectively.

Arabia Mountain (15-9) reached the Class AAA state playoffs via a
doubleheader sweep of North Springs and travel to No. 1 ranked Columbia
(23-3) for a 2 p.m. doubleheader to open the best-of-three series.

Junior Alfred Francis leads the Rams offense with the fourth best average
in the county at .525 with 16 RBI, seven doubles and two triples. Junior
Jordan Scott leads the Rams' hurlers with a 2.78 earned run average with
48 strikeouts, 21 walks and a 5-3 record in 50 1/3 innings on the mound.
