DeKalb Schools Gymnastics Championships Today

2012 Championships start at 6 p.m. in Dunwoody.

The 2012 DeKalb County Gymnastics Championships take place at Dunwoody today, Monday, April 16 beginning at 6 p.m. as 11 DeKalb schools compete for the title.

Dunwoody goes for its fourth consecutive title having won the last three championships, including a tight 92.05-89.975 win over Lakeside in 2011.

Dunwoody head coach Cassandra Watkins is going for her eighth title overall which would break a tie with Lakeside’s Shirley McDaniel with seven titles at one school and also tie the eight titles won by Lucia Norwood at Briarcliff (3) and Lakeside (5).

The Lady Wildcats are led by sophomore Lizzie Marra who was second in the All-Around last year and placed in all four of the individual events. Senior Oksana Casey also returns for Dunwoody following two gold medals at the 2011 meet as well as her second consecutive state meet appearance. Casey finished 12th in the uneven parallel bars at the state meet.

Lakeside which finished second to Dunwoody the past two years looks to sophomore Linsey Bergstrom to lead the way following her 2011 bronze medal finish at the county championships which included a silver medal in the balance beam.

The Tucker Lady Tigers finished just less than eight points behind Dunwoody in the 2011 championships and return senior Asha Bashir who finished sixth overall in the All-Around, including a silver medal in the vault and a bronze in the balance beam.

Arabia Mountain finished fifth overall a year ago falling just 12 points shy of Dunwoody and returns sophomore Camille Cassar who piled up a score of 33.15 to win the county All-Around title in 2011 as a freshman. Cassar won the gold medal in the floor exercise and the vault on the way to the All-Around title.
