DeKalb Schools Baseball: Stephenson Begins Season with 3 Wins

Stephenson Jaguars matched their entire victory output from a year ago.

Stephenson led the way among four local squads that posted undefeated records in the opening week of the 2012 season.

Coach Marco Jackson's Stephenson Jaguars matched their entire victory output from a year ago, rolling past Mt. Zion (19-4) Feb. 21, Central Gwinnett (5-2) Feb. 23 and North Springs (6-3) Feb. 25 by the combined margin of 30-9 in a perfect 3-0 start.

Coach Lavato Byrd's Cedar Grove Saints also got off to a strong 2-0 beginning, registering 17 runs in triumphs over Southwest DeKalb (8-2) Feb. 21 and Lithonia (9-8) Feb. 23.

Coach Steve Dennis and the Columbia Eagles likewise posted impressive numbers offensively in starting the 2012 campaign with a 2-0 mark, scoring 20 runs while taking care of Meadowcreek (11-5) Feb. 21) and Tucker (9-6) in extra innings Feb. 25.

Miller Grove rounded out the list of unblemished teams, as the Wolverines handed Terrence Canty a victory in his head coaching debut with a 13-1 decision over Miller Grove Feb. 22.

INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS:

Sophomores Trey Nelson (3 IP; 4 SO) and Juan Hambrick (1 IP; 1 SO) teamed up to post the first no-hitter of the year in Miller Grove's 13-1 decision over Stone Mountain Feb. 22.

Junior Fentress Henderson (3-3; 3 RS; 3 RBI; 1 3B; 4 SB) and senior Sean Charleston (2-3; 2 RS; 1 RBI; 2 2B; 2 SB) led the offensive push for the Wolverines in the contest.

Senior Denzel Washington shined on several fronts in pacing Cedar Grove's 8-2 victory over Southwest DeKalb Feb. 21. Washington went the distance on the mound, allowing only one earned run and three hits while striking out two over four innings.

Washington also shined at the plate, going 2-3 with three RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases. Senior Ahkeem Taylor (2-3; 1 RS; 1 RBI), freshman James Hartsfield (2-3; 1 RS; 2 SB) and sophomore Bryson Allen-Williams (2-3; 3 RBI; 1 SB) also delivered multiple hits for the Saints.

Chamblee received a stellar pitching effort from junior Patrick Gaulden in a 7-3 victory over Riverwood Feb. 20. Gaulden struck out three and allowed four hits and one run over five innings.

Senior David Coble paced a seven-hit offensive attack for Chamblee in the contest, going 2-3 with two runs scored and two doubles. Columbia's 11-5 romp over Meadowcreek featured five players with two hits each in sophomore William Belcher (2-3; 1 RS), freshman Trent Nash (2-4; 3 RS; 2 RBI; 2 3B), junior Xavier Floyd (2-3; 3 RBI; 1 RS; 1 2B), junior Demitrius Jones (2-4; 2 RBI; 1 RS) and freshman Jaylen Atterburry (2-2; 1 RS; 1 RBI; 1 3B) made up that contingent.

Junior Tre' Jester posted the pitching triumph, allowing two hits and one earned run over 3 2/3 innings. Columbia next outlasted Tucker by a 9-6 count Feb. 25, tallying 13 hits to the two of the Tigers.

Atterburry (3-5; 2 RBI; 1 RS), Belcher (2-5; 2 RS; 2 RBI) and Floyd (2-3; 2 RS; 2 RBI; 1 2B) led that offensive parade. Lakeside opened the season with an impressive 8-1 decision over Druid Hills Feb. 20. Junior Chad Sitten (3-3; 2 RS; 1 RBI; 1 2B) and junior Rob Cosby (2-4; 1 RS; 1 RBI) shined brightest on the offensive end, while junior Adam Hall struck out three over 2 1/3 innings to garner the pitching triumph. Sophomore Kevin Winbush struck out five and allowed three hits over five scoreless innings to pace Southwest DeKalb's 6-5 victory over Martin Luther King Jr. Feb. 20. Junior Malcolm Moore (2-4; 1 RS; 1 SB) paced the Panther offense.
