DeKalb Educator Honored for Connecting Refugee Families with Schools

Robert Moseley of DeKalb County Schools will be honored next week for his support of parent engagement in the community.

On April 22, Refugee Family Services and Refugee Resettlement and Immigration Services of Atlanta will honor Robert Moseley of DeKalb County Schools for his support of parent engagement in the community at Refugee Family Services’ annual luncheon, Breaking Bread Together.

Moseley is the former principal of Jolly Elementary School in DeKalb County. At Jolly Elementary, Moseley partnered with RFS and created a Parent Engagement Program for refugee families. This program brings Parent Engagement Specialists on campus each day and has an afterschool program specialized for refugee students.

Since the program began, students have achieved a higher rate of success and parents are more involved in the school.

“With the Parent Engagement Program at Jolly, we saw parents more in the school and the students were more involved. Having someone from the community the parents can connect with helps the children succeed,” said Moseley.

Breaking Bread Together is an event to benefit RFS and RRISA. The two organizations will merge Oct. 1. Both believe that as one organization, an unequaled continuum of support and service can be offered that extends from refugees’ first arrival in the country, through their education, training, and community integration. This continuum would culminate in their becoming American citizens, strong families, and community contributors who give back to others.
