Stone Mountain Taps Former Mayor for Interim City Manager

The council voted Thursday to offer Gary Peet a six month contract to be its interim city manager. The council suspended city manager Barry Amos from duty on Nov. 6.

Two days after removing its city manager, the Stone Mountain City Council voted on a proposal Thursday to offer its former mayor, Gary Peet, a six-month interim city manager contract.

Five council members voted in favor of the proposal; councilwoman Nan Nash abstained because Peet is a neighbor and works for Nash Security, Inc., her husband's company. Peet "will be leaving us to take that job" as interim city manager, she said.

"Gary did an outstanding job as mayor," city councilman Steve Higgins said.

This past Tuesday, Nov. 6, the council suspended city manager Barry Amos at its regular business meeting.

The city's current mayor, Pat Wheeler, said in the proposal to suspend Amos that the council had "lost confidence in Mr. Amos by reason of his failure to communicate on a consistent and reliable basis with all members of the council" as well as with city department heads.
