Public Hearings To Begin on Decommissioning Schools

Hearings will be held on Feb. 19 and 26; Smoke Rise and Rockbridge elementary schools are on the phase-out list.

The DeKalb County School District will hold public hearings starting next week on plans to decommission 12 local schools over a five-year period.Β

The 'master facility plan' proposes phasing out 12 instructional facilities: Austin Elementary, Avondale High, Clifton Elementary, DESA/Terry Mill, Fernbank Elementary, Meadowview Elementary, Midway Elementary, Ronald McNair Middle, Pleasantdale Elementary, Rockbridge Elementary (in Stone Mountain), Smoke Rise Elementary (in Stone Mountain) and Wadsworth Elementary.

These schools will be replaced by the construction of new facilities and repurposing existing facilities, a DCSD press release stated.

Public hearings will be held from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Feb. 19 and Feb. 26 at the DCSD Administrative and Instructional Complex, 1701 Mountain Industrial Boulevard in Stone Mountain.
